UPC Wifi Disconnecting

I've been having ongoing problems with my UPC broadband for the past few months. The wifi keeps disconnecting, sometimes every few minutes and it's really annoying. UPC replaced the modem last month, from a technicolor to a Cisco, but if anything the problem has got worse.

Would it be worthwhile buying a modem myself and using that? And if so what would be the best one to get? I understand that you can't just plug in a new modem but have to use bridging, is that easy to set up?

Another option instead of bridging is just disable wireless on the UPC router, all you need is an access point.

Buy an Apple Airport Express they are relatively low price, fast and reliable.

Choose manual setup in Airport utility on Windows or OSX and the important bits are
    * On wireless tab create a wireless network
    * On Internet tab select connect using ethernet (your Airport plugged in to UPC via ethernet) and connection sharing (off bridge mode)

Thats all there is to it, once you update the airport you will get a wireless access point, provided the UPC broadband link is stable you shouldn't have any problems unless your house is a WiFi black spot.

If you're plugged in via ethernet, does the WAN connection drop?

I had a similar issue with UPC broadband a few years ago and the cisco modem was actually resetting every time the WAN dropped due to an issue on the line. A new modem will do nothing for you if this is the case.

Thanks for the reply. No I don't think the WAN connection drops it just seems to be the Wifi. I might go with catfax's suggestion of the Airport Express. never thought of that.

If you have a cisco 3925 the changes are that you can bridge it properly - there have been been threads on here which say that the cisco overheats pretty quickly and that bridging it (or attaching a fan via usb) improves its performance. Have a look here.
