Too little time for a marathon?

    Hi all,

I did the Frank Duffy run this past Saturday in a time of 1 hour 27 mins - very happy with that - was aiming to 1:30.

I am down to do the half marathon in Dublin in Sept and have a target of 2hrs for that which I feel is very doable - I wasn't feeling too bad after the 10 mile

My question is....the 10 mile run was the furthest I have ever run, and the upcoming half marathon will be the same, have I left it too late to start aiming for the 2015 full marathon?

I would like to do it, but not at the cost of seriously injuring myself due to lack of time....however having said that, I am at a decent level of fitness now and with a young family, thoughts of having to get up to this level again or keep this level of fitness (running wise) isn't filling me with joy

Why not strike while the iron is hot?

Below is a plan that I could follow from now to Oct which seems likes it gets me to where I want to be

The furthest you've run is 10 miles. You have a young family, so you're probably relatively young yourself. What's the rush? I see the bit where you say 'strike while the iron is hot' but I'm afraid having run less than half the distance 2 months before a marathon is most definitely not hot.

If you're a bucket lister, go ahead, knock yourself out.

My advice would be, go for the Half. Train properly next year...... do marathon in 2016 or 17.

I agree with Itziger. The Novices this year some have already done 17 miles and this Saturday looking at doing 19m. You did do a good time for the 10 mile but wouldn't have the mileage in your legs for the full marathon. Train and enjoy the half and think about DCM next year.

Agree with above. If you are anxious to do one maybe aim for a spring marathon

    Hi Splashthecash,
I too am running in the same shoes as yourself. I decided in July that i was going to do the DCM. At that time, the furthest i had run was 6mi but i have been following a progressive training plan and am now up to 12mi. I didn't complete the Frank Duffy as quickly as you (1 hour 37 min) but i felt great after and any soreness in my legs was foam rolled away by the following morning.
I couldn't imaging training for more than 16 weeks but then again, i'm learning as i run! Personally, if your putting in the training and taking care of yourself and listening to your body then i don't see why you couldn't go for the DCM!
    Good luck!
