Gas like smell on high revs/heavy load

    Hey folks,
Been having an issue with a 2.4 125 Luton Transit for a few weeks now where there's a strange gas like smell coming when in high revs (anything around 4,000) or 3,500 with a heavy load. You can really only get the smell when the drivers window is open too. Mechanic tried to diagnose what it was, said it didn't seem to be the clutch rubbing and everything else seemed fine. He welded on an exhaust extension but I can still smell it.

It gets very overpowering when on long journeys with a heavy load. I recently had the EDG valve replaced and it happened both before and after this. I also recently had the timing chain replaced and it happened both before and after.

Can't seem to figure out what it is and it's not really possible to reproduce the issue for the mechanic as it's a fair spin to the nearest motorway and I never have the vans loaded unless I'm on a job.

Has anyone ever experienced anything similar and if so, what did it turn out to be? It could also be my imagination, but I think it's a stronger smell when the road veers to the left.

    Any feedback appreciated :)

If its not clutch it might be wortg looking at front brakes.

Thanks for the info, will ask them to be checked next time. It may have improved since the new exhaust has been put in, I just haven't been able to test it properly, it's just the tail end of the exhaust that was changed, so the smell is probably still there, it's just being blown further away from the window and can't creep into the cab as easy. Would something like that show in an emissions test and how are these issues usually resolved?

I would wonder if this is just due to the extra heat generated in the manifold area under load and working hard.. that extra heat could just be burning off any little spot of nearby oil..
I see it with tractors.. just tipping about and it is fine, working hard and if there is a bit of oil about it can be heated more than usual and burn a little..
