I have recently taken up cycling again after a break of 20 years (I am 56), just enjoy cycling for pleasure. I bought a Raleigh Loxley and really like the bike and it has what has been described as a comfortable gel saddle however I am suffering a lot from pain in the coxes area, I wonder if anyone would have any advice, would padded shorts help or should I consider changing the saddle?

I'd have a good read of this first...

but padded shorts are definitely a good idea.

Pain in the coccyx area wouldnt be alleviated by padded shorts. I would suggest s saddle with a channel that runs right to the very end of the saddle rather than just the central part. There are many saddles that have such a channel, the Prologo Scratch 2 PAS being one that comes to mind but I'm sure most saddle manufacturers make a similar model. The idea is to take all weight of your tail bone and place it on the sit bones.

Ah fantastic, thank you both so much for your responses really appreciate it. I will read though the sheldon brown item and investigate the different saddles... I had no idea really of what to do, bearing in mind my age I was not sure that anything would help.

Saddle choice is a very personal thing, and you'll probably need to try a few. The Brooks B17 is certainly one to add to your list and is popular among long distance cyclists. On a tighter budget, Charge Spoon also seems very popular.
