    Can anyone recommend any free mastering software that's any good?

    On a linux platform Ardour as a DAW and JAMin for mastering.

    Audacity is pretty popular. I've used it in the past but I've never had to do anything particularly advanced though.

    Does Reaper fit the bill here?

    (I could be showing my ignorance on what you mean by mastering software, but Reaper has worked for all my needs so far)

    Mastering is a hard-won artisanal skill requiring specialised equipment, mix rooms, speakers–and an engineer who understands your music. There is no shortcut though a good mastering job, and no single best practice for mastering in general. Look around until you find a good one, then never let them go! :)
