My car failed it's nct tonight due to a leaking shock absorber on the front drivers side.
I'm just wondering would anyone have a rough estimate as to how much I'd be looking at to replace it.

Both sides will have to be replaced. What car is it?

Not 100% true. Depending on the value of the car, usually a 2nd hand shock from the same era car will do, economically at least. I've never had any imbalance issues doing this unless both sides are knackered.

OP in my experience, its much easier to to swap out the whole shock/spring unit as a whole, otherwise they will have to split. Will save you in labour costs(which should only be 1 hr imo)

It is impossible to say what the parts or labour cost will be without knowing the make and model.

It is preferable to change shock absorbers in pairs but changing just the faulty one will get you through the NCT in the majority of cases.

Forgot to mention that, it's an 07 Toyota avensis

About €150 would be average I would say. €90 for new shock and €60 for labour or thereabouts.

Sorry should is what I meant to say. You can put a secondhand one in alrite and it will probably do for the test but really 2 new shocks is really best practice.

buy a used whole shock out of scrappies about 30 euro .and fit it yourself only a few bolts hold it or get some independent garage cost about 50 in Labour.

Fast fit have quoted me a rough price of 330 for two shocks and tracking,he's unsure of an exact price but said that's what I'd be looking at.
If I was to buy the shocks myself would it work out cheaper getting them fitted?

I was looking at these ones here

OP if cash isnt an issue get 2 new shocks fitted and you wont have any suspension issues from them for a long time

If cash is tight go to scrappie get shock from same year car and if your not hadny with spanners an indepentant mechanic would charge maybe 40e or so its a half hour job at max

Have a guy going to fit them for 30 a corner, I showed him kyb shocks I was looking at online for 75 each he said he could source cheaper spurious parts, are they just as good as oem?

Kyb or Monroe are good and will last a long time.

Kyb are surprisingly cheap just ring a few motor factors and get some prices, I priced them online and found it a waste of time as they were coming in at €70 a corner and that didn't include delivery, if I were you personally I'd buy the shocks myself as €75 seems excessive, you should be able to get kyb for €55 to €60, I'll ring my local motor factors in the morning and see what price they do
