If you're living in say Wexford and you buy a car in Cork as a brand new 152 car and register it to your home address in Wexford what reg would normally be on the car? Would it be Wexford or Cork reg?

Can you decide which it gets?

It goes on the home address you give them.
Makes no difference where you buy it.

You can pretty much register a new car in any address you like and change address after you tax it.

    Example

    Mr Cabaal
    C/O Blah blah garage
    Dublin Road
    Cork

Sorry, likely didn't make it clear as I should have.
what I mean is what would the reg be?

    Would it be
    152 C 12345
    or
    152 WX 12345

Is the car reg supposed to be based on your registration address (ie: Wexford) so it would be WX or would it be based on where the car is bought and registered with the dealer (Cork)?

If you buy from Cork can you decide it should be a WX registration plate on the car?

My reading of http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/travel_and_recreation/vehicle_standards/vehicle_registration_numbers.html suggest that if you live in Wexford then it should be a wx registration plate even if you buy it from Cork.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_registration_plates_of_the_Republic_of_Ireland also backs this up as it says:
A vehicle's number plate is determined when it is first registered, the county/city code being taken from the first owner's postal address. Registration remains fixed on the one vehicle until it is de-registered (exported, destroyed, etc.), and cannot be transferred to other vehicles.

So if I'm buying a new car from Cork it should have a WX reg plate based on fact I live in Wexford and thats the address its going to be registerede to, if this is the case then why would a dealer ask is it ok if they give me a C reg plate?

If you give a Wexford address you get WX

The only reason they'd give you a c plate is they want to register it as a demo, sell it to you and then claim demo rebate from the distributor. It adds another owner to the car.

Bad form if they didn't make that clear.

    Ok, thanks
So why would a dealership ask if its ok for the car to have a C reg? How could it end up with a C reg when I don't live in Cork?

    hmm, yeah thats my thinking
Def didn't even suggest this at any stage of any discussion, just asked if it was ok if it had a C reg.
I always thought upto a few min ago when I started looking into this that the car reg was based on the county the dealership was in. So if you bought in Cork it would always be a Cork reg etc.

Not terribly happy about this, I'll be having words with them on Monday morning as I don't expect a new car to have two owners. Odd thing is the car had no plates on it.

If it was prev reged as demo model can the reg be changed?

That's the only plausible reason they'd do it.

The logbook will say how many previous owners, if there's 1 listed you know you are the 2nd owner. Sounds like the dealer trying to pull the wool over your eyes.

The logbook is only issued when someone taxes the car.
Generally with demos, the garage needs to tax them to get the rebate,
If there is a logbook then it's not new.

It does alright and I'm not happy,
Car is coming in at around 17k, I'd settle for it still even with 2 owners but I wouldn't expect to pay the same price as it'll hurt resale later down the line. That I expect to be owner number 1 when I get a new car!.

Curious the best way of handling this if they are trying to pull a fast one? What I should look for (perhaps discount on the price) and what I might be able to get?

Tell them you want 152 - WX on the reg as per your home address and see what they say.

So gave them a call, says it can be changed to a WX plate no problem and its not pre-registered or a demo model.
Did say that if they reg it as a C plate they can offer additional discounts? Is this type of thing normal?

Kinda still sounds like they were pulling a fast one.
Did they offer you extra discount now?

Well, they mentioned saying there's no problem changing it to a WX plate for starters. This would surely rule out anything being pre-reged as the plate can't be changed if it was pre regaged as C?

They did say reging as C allows further discounts, hinted towards paying Motor tax on it for the first year if I opted for this. If they did this it would be worth 190e.

Can dealers earn more on a car if they sell it as a local reg plate versus another random county?

For the sake of €190 take the WX reg. They will most likely get a demo discount on it if they register it to themselves. If all they want to share of that is €190 then personally I'd leave them without any of it.

I could be wrong here, but I'm guessing what they did here was give you the car near cost price an were gonna hang onto the demo discount for profit.
Looks like they're backtracking if all they're giving you extra for c reg is the tax. If you can get WX then go for that.
Pre reg doesn't have to be regged already. Ie they could give you a choice of colour then reg the one you like.
