Has anyone seen this, was in the news recently

    https://vimeo.com/43038579

I'd be interested to know what triggers it and if you can repack it...other than that it seems like a pile of unnecessary gadgetry shįte :) the girls seem to think quite highly of their own product though.

    It's old hat.

Excuse the pun but its been around for a while, at least 3 years according to that video. Not a bad idea but it hasn't gone into production yet, so maybe that says something about it too.

It's been through the mill here a few times.

It's over priced over engineered and ultimately it's been a failure.

I'll stick with the polystyrene :)

oh!...sorry, was a link on a news site only yesterday.

agreed on the polystyrene, I don't even know if I have my helmet on at times, don't know where the discomfort she mentions as a big reason for the redesign.

The video is dated about 3 years ago. We've probably had getting on for a dozen or so threads on it. They seem to keep attempting to relaunch it quite regularly which is why it keeps cropping up on various sites (and highlights the fact it has simply not taken off - I personally see it as a gimmick and see no benefit whatsoever over traditional helmets (which are improving some of their safety features with the gradual introduction of MIPS and the like)

I'm pretty sure it has gone into production.

It did perform better than polystyrene-based helmets in initial tests (conventional drop tests), but it is not selling all that well.

One problem it has as a product is people who don't like helmets by and large have the option of not wearing them. Where people don't have the option, such as Australia, the Hövding isn't allowed as an alternative.

There's no version for children either. There are a lot more place with child helmt laws than universal laws.

I hate the gagging feeling the chin strap gives me.

At €299 I'm not surprised and I assume it's a single use item as a normal helmet would be. Although I vaguely remember they were nearly twice that price when originally released.

That and the fact there's a compressed air canister somewhere around your neck. I don't even enjoy carrying the one I have on my frame tbh.

I think the price is the biggest single barrier to uptake. If they could get that down, and get it included in the definition of "helmet" in helmet-law jurisdictions, it might have a chance.

TBH with something like that my biggest concern would be it triggering when it's not supposed to. Maybe in another decade or so technology generally may have moved on and this sort of thing may be in widespread use but I would need to see it being used without issue over an extended period before thinking about using something like this.

There is one of these (inflated) on display in the science gallery in trinity at the moment as part of their "Trauma - built to break" exhibition if any one is curious. Free in.

It does like quite good but you are putting a lot of faith in something that you can never be 100% sure it will work.
