The passenger side side light doesn't work, is this an automatic fail on the day of the test?

You might get away with it if it wasn't noticed but if it was noticed it would be automatic fail. Bulbs are cheap, your only issue could be some cars are a right pain to get access to them.

If it's checked yes if it was me I wouldn't take the chance of it

They do not check this. When it comes to checking lights, all they check are the brake lights and indicators. I am 100% sure this is not a problem...

But at the same time it seems silly not to get it replaced.

Maybe, but that was not the question.
What if the poster had their test the morning after their question. Their time would be better spent doing a pretest than replacing the bulb.
Then you would have to consider if it is simply a blown bulb or a wiring issue. A wiring issue could take qualified mechanics hours to find (speaking from experience), leading to significant labour costs (thankfully I had this problem under warranty). This could end up costing more then the price of a learners "old banger".

If their test was in the morning they should go to a garage and spend 2 quid on a bulb and change it.

In the vast majority of cases it is the bulb that fails, and not a wiring issue.

    Hi,

    2 quid on a bulb

Just had the front left dip lamp replaced by Halfords €19.99.

From opening to closing bonnet, it took him exactly 2 minutes 58 secs. and that included topping up the windscreen washer. But did have to wait five minutes to get served. Eight minutes in total.

In future will purchase, replace myself. Forgot can no longer claim running expenses off income tax.

Jaysis, but the OP was talking of a side light, so that type of bulb is typically very cheap! You're regular low beam bulb should be more.

Halfords are a joke for bulb prices a lot of the time. Check online for the likes of Osram.

    Hi,

checked the receipt, but the breakdown of price, that is, lamp - labour, is completely illegible. So can not tell how much lamp cost.

One thing, being a BMW did not have to worry about wiring issues :)
