Hi, I imported a car yesterday, paid vrt and road tax online today.

When do i have to get the NCT done? There was no information supplied to me at the vrt office on what to do.

The car was first registered in wales on 2008 march. Do I wait until next march to get the NCT done or do I get it done now?

Since it is a newly registered car it can take a few days or perhaps a week for your car to appear on the NCT system, once it is there you can book it on www.nct.ie. The car is due a NCT on the 4th anniversary of it's original registration date and every 2 years after that. So since your car was originally registered in March 2008 it needs an NCT now.

    Thanks for that info.

It not clear as on the NCT/VRT site as it states:

All cars should be tested on or before the anniversary date of first registration of the car in the country of origin

So that to me means march 2016, as that is the anniversary date of first registration of the car in the country of origin.

The NCT will run from the date you registered it in ROI.

Your car (as it's over 4 years old) is due NCT now on day of registration - so for you it's yesterday.
You are legally obliged to have valid NCT from now on and if you are caught driving it without valid test, you might get fined for it, as well as you might have trouble with insurance payout if you are involved in accident until you have NCT.

Funny thing though is, that it takes few days from date of registration for your car to appear on NCT system, and this is required for purpose of booking a test. So it's going to be another few days at least before you can book it for NCT, and obviously it's going to be another few weeks for your appointment unless you are incredibly lucky to be able to get appointment sooner.

That leaves you without a possibility to drive your freshly imported car legally for next few weeks.

As car is below 10 years old, once you do your NCT, it will be valid for 2 years from date of registration in Ireland so until 20th Aug 2017.
