Just reported in the Irish Times.

Health Warning: contains a lot of corporate 'spin' (aka waffle) - 'joint vision' etc.

The European and Asian golf tours have entered into a partnership which officials believe will help attract the world’s best players to their tournaments.

The joint vision will see commercial entities and membership portfolios of both tours combine to raise golf’s profile in each region and increase playing opportunities and prize funds.

I'd presumed they'd already joined, the first 20 European tour events aren't even in Europe.

It's a marriage of convenience that's for sure and to rephrase what you said above, with all the co-sanctioning that goes on these days, the first European tour event to be played in mainland Europe this year was the Open de Espana in the middle of May! No wonder Shane Lowry buggered off to the PGA Tour even though he didn't have a tour card, probably prefers burgers to Chinese food!
