Hi! I have a nice dilemma..approx €400 to spend & I want to buy a friend a Garmin bike computer for his birthday.
He cycles quite a bit but has to fit it around work & enjoys uploading his stats to Mapmyride etc

I am looking at the 510..
    The 810
    The 1000.
The 510 seems like a great computer, but no routing...the 810 does the navigation and the 1000 improves the mapping, bluetooth and other connectivity..

To date he has not needed to navigate using a bike computer..

Then the computer needs a hrm, speed and cadence sensor etc...

Apologies... I am just thinking aloud!

So would the 510 edge still stand out as a good bike computer?
If you were looking for a navigation tool would the 1000 be a lot better than the 810?

    Thank you!

810 bundle would be just under your budget so an excellent present.

That's probably your best bet. It's a mini Edge 1000 and the GLONASS support means it can get its GPS going very quickly.

Being able to "talk" to a phone via bluetooth means his data post ride can be uploaded via garmin connect to "where ever" very quickly.

    The bundle includes HR etc.

Bummer being in the "friend Zone" :/

520 is a good suggestion. You can get it for €379 on Bike24.de and bikecomponents.de, plus about €6 for postage. Wiggle are saying that theirs is for pre-order, available in mid-September, and the Germans have 10-20 day waits for their units. Last time I checked, Cyclesuperstore were still waiting for theirs. So basically, if your mate;s birthday is in the next week or two, go for one of the ones you listed previously. If not until late-September, definitely get the 520
If you need something quick, go for the 510. There is apparently a software update coming which will give it some of the functionality of the 520. It doesn't have maps, but I think most people don;t use the maps much anyway and it can give a kind of limited navigation.
You might also consider the edge 500. It's from 2009 but does everything you would want from gps, plus you can spend the leftover cash on a cake and a few beers...
Anyway, the 510 (and 810, 1000 and 500) are all available now.
