Steering wheel with airbag on car with no airbag - NCT

I'm putting a 92 Mazda MX-5 through the NCT next week. Its had the steering wheel from a mk2 mx-5 fitted, so it contains an airbag and says "airbag" on it.

As the MX-5 didn't come with an airbag until 1996, shouldn't it be able to pass if I explain this to them beforehand?

They may look for some official documentation to prove it.

AFAIK it's only the lights they check....

I.E. All the lights should come on and go off and not come back on again.

Remove the steering wheel pad with the airbag written on it. If it's not there, they can't fail it.

    Or, borrow a non-airbag wheel.

If the lights don't come on, and they spot the airbag symbol they'll assume it's not working or disabled. Best option would be to swap it out.

Lads on MX5 Ireland should be able to sort you with a replacement rather than messing about with it, Autocheck/Robert should have some. I can PM you his number if you want.

I was failed for this on my E36. They wanted to see the airbag light coming on and going off, and no amount of attempting to convince them worked - even asked them to check prior NCT results and had photos of the non-airbag wheel on it.

They said I need a letter from BMW stating the the car left the factory without an airbag. Said letter took almost 3 months to arrive, so no visual retest for me!

I also had a retrimmer redo the airbag in leather so that the offending Airbag wording is now gone -

Eventually gave in a bought a 2nd hand momo wheel, so lookout for a undeployed mk2 Nardi wheel on ebay/adverts soon!

One thing my car failed on, a hole in the front driver wing, which the tester made! It was a rough area previously, it looked like it was filled and sprayed haphazardly, but surely not a structurally integral part. Its just at the join between the wing and bumper. Surly this cannot be deemed a failure, is he just covering up the damage he caused by poking at a non-important area?

Also failed for non-working fog lights, but these do not exist on the car, it has the switch, but no fuse terminals or bulbs, so I'm going to take the switch off for the retest, as I understand if there is no switch, its not tested?
