I have a new Lenovo laptop with HDMI port and a nice big monster with no HDMI port but it has FireWire. Can this work?

IIRC FireWire is only for data.

What's the model of the monitor?

Are you sure it's a firewire port?
More likely to be a DisplayPort connection.

If you can provide the model of each then there might be a cheaper option than HDMI to Displayport which are expensive.

It would probably be cheaper to go HDMI -> DVI adaptor if there's no HDMI on the monitor, HDMI to DP would cost a lot of money unfortunately.

This is of course assuming that you meant displayport when you said firewire.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

A hdmi to DP port cable is only a few quid isn't it? Haven't tried it myself but should work as both are digital (smilarly a hdmi to dvi cable is cheap and should work)

Yup, that won't work. You can get a DP to HDMI adaptor but it won't work the other way.
