    Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has any advice regarding car hire in Italy. We are flying into bergamo Milan, and travelling to baveno (lake maggoire).

We were thinking of hiring a small car and having two named drivers but was wondering if anyone has any advice for what suppliers to use, whether they have full excess cover. One of the outlets we have checked require a holding deposit on the credit card of €1500. Is this standard or does anyone know of any place with a lesser amount?

    All advise greatly appreciated!!

Have you considered travelling by rail? Northern Italy has a fantastic rail network, the trains are pretty basic inside but they run on time and are relatively cheap.

Try arguscarhire.com I have used them many times (3 times in Bergamo) never had a problem. You can also choose an extra cover.

    No hidden charges.

    Hi,
I have used arguscarhire.com a lot as well but just make sure that you select one of the better car hire companies or you may find that there are extras when you get there. Usually go with one of the companies who offer to take the car with full tank of petrol and return it full as well. The ones who offer you the likes of pick up with a quarter tank and return it empty are usually out to make some more money than the price you pay on the website.
I have also used http://www.ebookers.ie and also find them very good. You get to see which hire company you are going with, rather than finding out after the booking is made.

Another option for you in terms of insurance is to take out an annual excess policy, especially if you think that you are going to rent a car again within the next year. What this means is that you can take out just the basic third party insurance with the car hire company rather than take the extra insurance that they will offer you at the rental desk. You would be liable then for lets say the first €1000 of any claim. This insurance covers the excess for you. This is the company that I have used for a number of years http://www.insurance4carhire.com/

Thanks I will look into both of these over the weekend. I see some of the ones don't have great ratings so will avoid those!

If you pay for full protection I presume you won't be charged excess or be caught out if something did happen?

I have found aerlinguscars.com to be very good value too. You may or may not be aware of this, but I do have a word of caution: be very careful when driving around the cities that you do not wander inadvertently into the ZTLs; these are traffic zones which are limited to the likes of local residents' cars. The fines for doing so are quite stiff (as are the administration fees that the rental company also charge you for passing your details on to the local police) and you only find out that you have transgressed several months after returning home.
