Friendly reminder. Over the past week I've noticed runners out in the evening on country roads with no hi viz on them. The evenings are starting to close in already. Maybe if you're going on a long run on country roads after 7 consider bringing a hi viz with you :)

Some people don't need them. They're invincible. That, or "it's up to the drivers to see me."

It's probably the terrible summer but the last few evenings it's getting dark after 8. Depressing.

Actually most of these bright green & yellow tops don't have any hi vis/reflective strips on them. The hi vis reflects when light is shone on them and the amount of runners who wear these tops and think they can be seen is frightening. There is no reflective material on most of them so please check. I started wearing my hi vis runners bib last week as it is fairly dark on country roads now from 8ish onwards . It was almost pitch dark when i got home at 9.15. i stayed on back road as i wouldn't go on main roads in the country even with hi vis on me.

No, 'hi vis' is high visibility, these are designed to be seen clearly in daylight, hence their application in many daytime workplace environments. Reflective material on the other hand, as the name suggests reflects light shone on them.

What you're talking about in the combination is a hybrid garment in high visibility material with reflective elements.

I think you will find that the colours are technically dayglo and are in fact designed to improve visibility by allowing the wear to be discernible from the background colour.

It is wrong to suggest that day glo colours are high-viz (not at you lgk, general marketing should get a slap) as many people wear them at night not realising that there is zero retro-reflectivity from these colours. As you say, you need the high visibility colour combined with the reflective materials (3M etc) to be seen at night.

It is amazing how many people get confused by the necessity for even just a small amount of reflective material to make something truly 'high-viz'. I've seen many people picking bright colour over high reflectivity for running at night.

Makes no difference to some drivers, on Sunday alone I counted 4 cars that swerved to miss me the last minute... Was thinking is there a new game for drivers in co Mayo to see how close you can get to a runner... And yes I had a high visibility jacket on with reflective stripping... To make things worse two of these close encounters were on long stretches of rd where they should have seen me well in advance... Please don't get me started on cars not indicating when passing me if there is a car behind them...

Is that not a real warning to you to quit running on the road? Nothing to do with right or wrong, high vis or no high vis, just life and death.

I'd a few near misses like that last winter.

One was a lad who did stop and gave out about the fright I gave him as he didn't know it was a person behind the bright light.

Another was messing around with a coffee cup and interior light and I could see that they had no clue I was on the road (dusk).

Another squeezed through as a car was coming the other way and gave me no room.

I've been tempted to carry a small stick to clip the mirror with to wake these people up to how close they are passing pedestrians.

+1 this happens to me regular on narrow roads. They expect you to jump into the bushes so there 151/2 cars dont get scratched.:mad:

I tend to stay in urban areas that are lit up with foot paths in the darker months except Saturday and Sundays. It gets boring but I feel safer. Still wear my high viz vest when in lit up areas and weekend day time runs in the darker months. I prefer ruing in the country side and exploring new routes in the mountains but had a few scares even with high viz vest and head lamps so I don't think it's worth the risk anymore

Did my first dark morning run the other day at 5am, I wear a reflective top but what I find works best is a really bright headtorch...

You've never seen people be so cautious when driving towards me :)
