5.4l per 100kms. About 54mpg. Have one now for 2 years. Love it.

I heard that 08-early'10 diesels had a weak crankshaft and broke in two. Late '10's got a revised short-block. Ive no idea how common this is, but no harm to google it first.

Read all about it before I bought it. Seems to be not very common so took a chance on it. Has not missed a beat and I cover 700kms every week. Previously had BMW 520D. Subaru far better driver especially in winter. most of my driving is on back roads.

It's the original model. It's not the estate it's the Saloon. A full tank gets me 1050Kms

Very economical when the fricken engine goes belly up, and is stuck in a garage for 3 weeks waiting for people to get their act together. FSSH, not even 100k on the engine, never skipped a beat in all the years I had it, then one morning oil light flashed, 2 minutes later, stopped with a bang. I've been given an estimate , they have to be kidding I thought, they aren't, it's scary.

    What happened ?

No loss of power, no rise in temperature, just oil light flashed, so I was getting off motorway heard clicking from the engine and at the roundabout it stopped with a bang, I had to push it off the roundabout myself, within 2 minutes, from vroom to bang.

I'm told the conrod broke, but it seems it's completely gone, even the cylinder heads are cracked, garage says he's never seen any engine this bad, Full Subaru service history, last one 3 months ago, It's beyond a shortblock rebuild, which costs approx. 9k, Garage has to send a report to Subaru to see what they say, (and all my service stamps)

Mine ('08 saloon) did around 5.5l/100 km no matter what I threw at it.

@selous - have you spoken to roadnrace in the UK?

    Thanks,
Yep, emailed him, £5000 for a reconditioned one, not including shipping or injectors, my injectors need to be reconditioned, it seems only ONE place in Ireland do them, and it costs E1000, I must say I wasn't expecting this damage from a Subaru, I was doing around 180km round trip to work and home, avg 6l per 100km, it went bang about 500m from work, (phew)
    All a waiting game now.

I hope you will get some good will gesture from Subaru.

What year is yours and how long since the warranty expired?

Best of luck selous. Awful kick in the teeth when something like that happens. Hopefully Subaru make a decent goodwill gesture.

It's a 2008, warranty out 4 years, but has a Subaru service history, last one only 3 months ago and no sign of any problem with it, but, there was no sign the day it went either, no loss of power, no temp increase, nothing, till oil light flashed, 2 minutes later, bang.

It would be nice if they did, or why bother get your car serviced with them after the warranty finishes.

Kick in the teeth indeed, was offered E500 scrap for it, (no way) but the other end is upwards of E9k for repairs, hopefully they will come up with something.
Must say I like the bloody car, grown attached to it. a pleasure to drive in the crappy early mornings to work.
I'll keep you informed to what happens.
    Thanks.
