Audi A4 electric driver's window acting up

I've a 2003 A4. The drivers window is operated from the door armrest. It's been a bit iffy for the last few years - requiring a harder press to open the window than the passenger window switch located beside it. Occasionally it gives up the ghost altogether and I forget about it. After a few days/week it works again of it's own accord and can be fine for another 6 - 8 months (even if requiring that slightly harder push down)

This morning I opened the window a few inches and it closed itself after a second. Tried again and it closed again. Then the switch stopped working.

    What's likely to be up?

    Edit:

By the way: it feels as if each of the switches is a two-throw switch in both up and down directions. As in; the first throw is incremental window up/down and the second throw auto (or all the way) up/down. As it is, both switches only work incremental, opening so long as you're holding them down.

There is a reset function....once the window is up, release the switch momentarily and then hold it in the "up" position for a few seconds. There is also another way of doing it with the key in the door lock but I can't remember exactly...they are a fairly common problem though so google should help!
