From the 98fm website minutes ago:
The Directors, management and all the staff at 98FM are heartbroken at the death of our dear colleague and great friend Johnny Lyons.

Johnny died suddenly and peacefully at his home in Dublin.

Johnny has been the backbone of our sports team for over 20 years. His distinctive voice and his passion for soccer defined Johnny for so many of his listeners. He was a talented presenter with a deep knowledge and love of sport and his Sunday morning programme ‘Now that’s What I Call Sport’ was a weekly date for so many Dubliners.

Keith McCormack, Chief Executive of 98FM paid tribute to Johnny saying "The entire station is devastated with the sudden passing of a beloved colleague. Johnny, with his larger than life personality, was loved by all listeners and colleagues alike. He was a huge part of the 98FM family and will be dearly missed, we would like to extend our deepest sympathies to his family at this time. May he rest in peace".

98FM will be paying tribute to Johnny on air over the next few days.

What is the point of the thread then? Ive been told by mods, the site is not a news dump...
And what did I say? I questioned the ceo talking rubbish... I did not like the man's voice, I was not a fan of his show, nor his news bulletins. Doesnt mean I am happy the man is dead.

And on you go. posting for the sake of it. The internet is a sad place sometimes

    yes it was

Very sad news. I never heard him on Today FM, but I'd have known him from listening to 98fm on and off over the years. He seemed to be a very jolly sort of chap, and usually engaged in the bit of banter.

Wow that is a shock. Was he ill?

He had a broken ankle and was off work. No foul play is suspected.

It's not really fair to speculate further but there are known complications with such injuries.

Wasn't really a fan, didn't care for him on the phone in on Today FM at all tbh, but he seemed to be a nice guy who (at face value) seemed to be well liked in 98. RIP and all that obviously, always sad when someone dies suddenly like that.

Any chance a Mod can delete Fudge You's comments.

"Bad taste" isnt even remotely close to what they are. Hang your head in shame Mister.

Quite sad that a thread paying respects to a deceased radio presenter has to turn into a personal opinion rant. Not the time, not the place.

He's seen the error of his ways.

Met Johnny myself a few years back; he was so friendly and seemed like a genuinely nice guy. Such a shame for someone so young to pass away. It must be very difficult for everyone in the Malt House/Marconi House losing another colleague so soon and so suddenly. RIP.

RIP. Knew him fairly well when he was covering LOI as a frelance many years ago before his radio days. He was a gentleman.

Of all the voices on Irish radio, I think I loved Johnny's the most. He was the only Irish radio DJ I've ever tried to do an impression of and failed miserably every time. His voice always cheered me up and I'll miss hearing him on the radio.

Desperate, Desperate sad news, he came across as a larger than life character.....always loved waiting for the end of the sports bulletin for his sign off....I'm Johnny Lyons!

Unfortunately, reading between the lines, it looks like a sad and untimely ending.

When someone passes so suddenly at a young age it's an even greater shock to the system. My sister in law rang me this morning as she's listens to 98fm and she's devastated. She's never met him but like most people she was used to hearing his distinct and unique way of broadcasting on 98fm daily. His peers seemed to hold him in high regard right across the media spectrum. A sad loss for his family friends listeners and his colleagues. Thoughts and prayers with you all.

    Rest in peace.

Not a 98fm listener at all, but I did occasionally hear him anchor the phone in soccer show on Today FM.

His ability to keep a straight face as caller after caller referred to English football teams as "we" and "us" in the most bogger accents imaginable was admirable.

    RIP.

98 did themselves and Johnny proud today. I missed Ray this morning and most of Dublin Talks but Barry and Dara were excellent all day.

98 really went out of their way to make it as fitting a tribute as possible. From changing up thier playlist to some of Johnny's favourites - Metallica, AC/DC, Iron Maiden and more - to replacing their logo with a more sombre and fitting look on their Facebook. The whole thing had lots of class.

Well done all at Malt House.

I can honestly say I never heard this guy on radio (Don't listen to 98fm). I never will hear him now anyway. I am baffled as to how that has happened considering he was in the media business for 20 years.
From all the comments he seemed sound anyway so he must have done something right.

I remember him now appeared on that soccer show today fm have the odd time. A "shouty, shouty really enthusiastic" type dj.

May he shout in peace :)

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Dara Quilty did a nice little touch by making the When I Was 17 for Johnny's year, 1983.

The tribute they did for him was great as well.

The whole day was just beautifully done. You could tell how close-knit a team they all are there and how well they knew and cared about Johnny.
