New Audi Q6 is Model X Competitor

Audi teases Tesla Model X fighter, says launch planned for 2018

Audi today issued a teaser picture and some details of an all-electric SUV that it will launch to rival the upcoming Tesla Model X.

The SUV will have a range of more than 500km (310 miles) and will go into production in 2018 as the brand's first volume electric car, Audi said in a statement.

Audi will preview the SUV, likely to be called the Q6, with the e-tron quattro concept that will debut at next month's Frankfurt auto show.

The four-seat SUV has a length between that of the Q5 and the Q7, Audi said.

The SUV will be powered by three electric motors – one on the front axle and two on the rear axle - used on the electric variant of the R8 sports car, which has a 450km range.

Audi did not give the details of the SUV's performance but reports in the motoring press said the model is expected to develop 500hp and 700Nm (517 lb-ft) of torque.

New battery technology and technical measures to reduce aerodynamic drag contribute to the EV's long range. The underbody is completely closed and it has movable aerodynamic elements at the front, on the sides and at the rear improve the air flow around the car, helping the model to achieve a drag coefficient value of 0.25, a new record in the SUV segment, Audi said.

The large lithium ion battery is positioned between the axles and below the passenger compartment, creating a low center of gravity and a balanced axle load distribution.

The SUV will be underpinned by Audi parent Volkswagen Group's second-generation MLB platform that offers weight savings, helping to boost its range.

The Q6's range exceeds the current range of Tesla's Model S, which can travel up to 435 km (270 miles) on a single charge. The Model X, Tesla's second model, is expected to have a range of 270 to 365 km (170 to 230 miles).

Tesla is increasingly seen as a threat to larger luxury-car brands like Audi because of the allure of its vehicles.

The Tesls model S range has recently been boosted to 300 miles at 60 mph.

The Audi is probably getting 300 miles form the NEDC test which is not a real life test of driving, it's a simulation. And it's design is to make Euro car makers pass emissions tests they otherwise could not.

The Q6 might get 250 miles and I doubt it will be seen before 2020. The Germans need to get the finger out, their public charging infrastructure is a joke and there are 0 incentives for electrics, though if German car makers are seen to take electrics seriously then the Government might offer incentives for electrics to boost home made EV sales just like the French do.

Most likely the Q6 EV will be a limited production EV sold at a high price, no fear of them making a longer range mass produced EV.

It looks like an estate not a SUV.

They also plan a plug-in and a hydrogen version. My guess is the plug in would be the better seller, who wants a 250-300 mile range car lol

that looks nice, but its hard to know if the range numbers are real without any battery details

I hope it sells well, we need more EVs on the road

I'd have serious questions about its reliability as well. Wouldn't want to be a guiney pig in any of VAGs new tech ICE or otherwise.

Pity they don't make something more affordable !!! Having a high price tag means they won't have to build many !

what are you basing this on

most EVs seem to be pretty good for reliability, electric motors are not a new tech and at this point I would argue Lithium ion batteries are a mature tech, so yeah its possible that Audi have done a piss poor job but I doubt it

Audi's generally terrible reliability issues and their fondness for electrical gremlins would have me being extremely wary. Again, I wouldn't trust any of their new ICE stuff for three or four years either.

Again - what are you basing this on? Hearsay or fact?

Latest JD Power reliability ranking attached.

Better than average which is impressive considered how technology advanced these cars are.

I never put much stock in statistics derived from user feedback. They're inherently schewed. While still problematic, statistics for the likes of warranty direct/consumer report remove a lot of the issues around human feedback and are coldly calculated on active warranties claims and failure rates. Again, these have issues but they're a far better reflection of the actual reliability. Here Audi - the whole VAG group with the exception of skoda - do terribly. I'm sure last years had Audi in seconds last position again.

Do we know what price the Tesla 3 will be and when it'll be on sale?

$35,000, due in late 2017 according to Elon Musk.

So that will be 35,000 Euro's excluding import duties and VAT but not including 5 K grant and 5 K VRT deduction provided it exists in 2018.

The SVE top spec Leaf would be 38 K in Ireland without the Grant or VRT reduction.

I'd be surprised if we see it in 2017 considering the delays with the X model. Hopefully I'm wrong because I'm due a new car July 17'

they will get it in the US and Europe first so we will have to wait a little longer

I don't think there will be to much of a delay with the model 3, they are building the battery factory to supply the battery pack so any delay would leave the worlds biggest battery factory idle and losing money

I'd shocked if the bottom of the range 3 was sold for less than €40k OTR over here.

The new E-Tron Sportback concept car (apparently real close to production) will debut at the Shanghai motor show this week

    Some numbers:

3 electric motors - one on front axle and two on rear giving 370kw max output
Liquid cooled lithium ion battery with energy capacity of 95 kWh
Can charge to 400km range in just 30 minutes and is setup for wireless charging
    0-100 possible in 4.5 seconds
A7 sized but will surely compete with new Tesla model X

Launches next year so watching pricing should be interesting.
