Meter in place for six months; bills still "Unmetered"

My wife just got off the phone with Irish Water. You've just sent us our second bill, and it's still unmetered, even though we've had a meter in place since about February.

The person from Irish Water said something along the lines that the first two bills are always unmetered (after first seeming to think that we didn't have a meter), and they'd give us a rebate later in the year. He also said that the WPRN we had was a placeholder and gave us the real one over the phone.

The representative said something about meters being hard to find in our estate too.  Is this a technical problem or unfamiliarity with our part of town on the part of drivers?  (Again I can give you details of where we live in a private message.)

    Questions:
    • Why can't IW read our meter after six months? (I can give you details in a private message if required)
    • How do I get my name added to the bill so I can ring IW and discuss issues with billing?  My wife is not technical and has no privacy at work anyway.
    • My bill says it is based on two adults, but there are also two children in the house.  How do I make sure the children are included in billing whenever you do finally send me metered bills?

    Hi tomasrojo,

    Thank you for your query.

In order to get your name added to the bill you will need to be added to the account also. You can do this by contacting Irish Water on 1890 448 448 with the account holder present. The account holder needs to grant permission for another person to be added to an account. Additionally, your account can be updated to reflect the correct occupancy at your property when you contact Irish Water to be added as a joint account holder.

If you do contact Irish Water and are added to the account, I will be able to assist you further in regards to your unmetered bills. Alternatively a member of our team on the phones would be happy to help.

I hope you find this information helpful. If you have any other queries, please don't hesitate to contact us.

    Kind regards,

    Niall

    Hi Niall,

I thought my bill problems were resolved but it's not quite over yet.

I did as you suggested and rang to get my name added to the bill, my two small children added to the account details, and to investigate why my bill was continuing to be unmetered.

It turned out that there was the equivalent of a double entry in the database for my property, with two WPRNs.  The unmetered version of my property should have been deleted now, and I should be getting metered bills from now on.

But this morning I got an unmetered bill for the first quarter of this year, a quarter I have already paid for.  I think the system must have picked up the change of WPRN, but not noticed the transfer of funds from the other one (or something like that).  The kids aren't mentioned on the bill either (under "Bill based on").

I only have the new bill with me, so I don't have the task number (or whatever it's called) of the previous issue, or my real WPRN and other details, all of which I wrote on the last bill.

When I get those details later today, can I get back to you and seek resolution this way, rather than over the phone?  This has cost me a lot of phone credit over the last few months already.

    Kind regards,

    Dermot

Actually, the Total due is -€64.82, so perhaps that means I'm in credit?

But the bill is still unmetered, doesn't mention my children (or me, still only my wife, despite my name being added to the property in the database) and is charging me for a period that I've already made a payment for. And I only paid the last bill about two months ago, I think.

Another bill arrived.  It's now "metered", has the two children included, and is obviously carrying over credit from the second of the two payments we made, which was the payment that should have been metered in the first place.

This all seems in order, so I'm happy to close this.

i thought the first 6 months bills were all meant to be unmetered anyway? it was a grace period so any leaks/issues could be addressed

Not in my case. Only the first bill was to be unmetered, as the meter wasn't in place for the full quarter. Everyone I know got metered bills once the meter had been in place for the entire quarter.

Like the last poster, I have received my third bill and even though the meter is in place outside the house. The bills are still showing as unmetered.

Can I pm with details of the address & WPRN?

    Thanks
