    Hi all,

Have another bit of building to do for the winter. Up to this point we have always galavaized the structural steel involved.
Just wondering what are people's experiences with shot blasting/priming, is it a good job to prevent corrosion and extend the life of the steel?
Galvanizing costs have increased to the point that the process is almost as expensive as the steel itself!!

Is it worth taking 'the hit' on the galvanizing costs to ensure a long lifespan or is shot blasting just as good??

    TIA

If it's a slatted shed your building the percentage extra on the overall cost of the building for galvanising the structural steel is worth it IMO. If there is going to be dung on steel work it's the only job.

Take the hit and go galvanized the first day, there's no comparison 10 yrs down the road. If you put the extra cost over 20 years it's not so bad.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

I've no actual sheds galvanised at home. The oldest one there isn't a budge out of it . There's one that was done 26-27 years ago that has started to be eaten away at the passage columns, but il just cut that section out and reeled a new piece in. I've one I put up last year and didn't galvanise either. If it's cleaned and painted every so often it will last an age. The one that's up twenty odd years never seen a power washer or paint until a couple of years ago. It's alright saying spread the cost over twenty years or so but I know from my own experiences, getting that extra couple of grand together can often be the difference between going ahead with a project or not.

I would galvanize. If cost was an consideration I would cut back elsewhere. On a 4 bay shed it is a little over 1K above shot blasting and priming. I have seen lads go for the Conc sheeting, for bells and whistle's on gates and barriers, pay 2K extra for slats and shot blast the beams. The two things you want right on a shed are the Tank and the RSJ structure.
