Exhaust holes

    Hi all,

One of the car's previous owners decided to drill holes into the rear muffler (...because why not?). Personally, I like the way it sounds. However, in the high revs it could well be considered obnoxious and will definitely not pass an NCT. It's also caking my rear right tire.

I'm thinking of covering the holes with exhaust putty. I just wish to know if that is NCT acceptable. If not I'll get it welded or source a replacement backbox.

    Thanks.

    Get a new back box.

    Get a new back box.

Sourcing a muffler for the car might not be so easy. Are you saying that sealing/welding the current one is not worth the hassle?

What car is it? I would always think those solutions are simply temporary until a replacement section of pipe can be added, or a new back box.

It's an FTO. I think you're right anyway, the holes are quite big and I doubt welds would last. Guess I'm off to find a second hand muffler :(.

If anyone has one btw, pm me.

Yes it's fine so long as there are no leaks. A bandage might be more secure though.

The exhaust putty and exhaust bandages never last more than a few weeks in my experience.

    Where in Ireland are you?

There's a good place in Crumlin, the name escapes me but if you're in Dublin I'll look it up for you.
They made up a section from the catalyst to the back box for me including a new resonator on an FTO a few years back.

If you're looking for a cheap fix the little tubes liquid metal filler that you can get in motor factors are probably a better idea.
I've had success on exhausts with that.
Just don't put it anywhere near the manifold...

    I'm in Dublin 8. Don't mind driving a bit.

Bandages wouldn't work because the holes are drilled right next to the tail pipe.

    Thanks.

any universal muffler would do ya as long as a silencer comes with it for example them fk performance ones etc. the quality won't be great but it should last at least a couple of years anyways will give the car a sporty hum nothing too loud. That said surely a 2nd hand fto back box wouldn't be too hard to find perhaps other mitsubishi mufflers fit aswell

Auto exhaust on Stannaway drive in Crumlin is the one. Give them a ring first, quite small but very busy.
