Notice Period

I'm putting in my notice to work in a few days as I want the apply myself 100% to my leaving cert.
I have yet the receive my contract, I'm meant to receive it in the next few weeks.
The problem is that because of this I don't know my notice period. As far as I know its 1 week. Someone who joined after me who is leaving on friday gave 1.5 weeks notice.
It is a retail job the store is really understaffed at the moment so I don't want to leave on a bad note. ( I would like to work for them in the future)
I was thinking 2 weeks notice (maybe more) but the problem is I'm down for a few days holidays next week before I go back to school. (I was planning on staying and working 1 day a week but when the cao points for this year came out I realised that I cannot risk losing any points).
Because of this, should I give 3 weeks?
    Thanks

Tell them you'd like to resign to focus on your study and ask how much notice they will accept?

Sorry for robbing your thread. In the same situation. I started off on a temp contract which states I only have to give one week. I was made permanent and noting saying that notice changed. According to the 2001 act if you are in a job less than two years it is only one week notice. Is this correct? I am there just over a year

If you are quoting this that's for an employer giving you notice.

The minimum may be a week, but if you've a contract that stipulates more then your employer may require you to give more notice.
