If it is on the journey planner then yes it is.

I would imagine they could - people might want to visit a shop!

I am pretty sure the ticket will open the barriers, but it may fall foul of this

    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/1984/en/si/0109.html
    6. When the fare to an intermediate station exceeds the fare to a more distant station, no person shall, for the purpose of travelling to such intermediate station, take or use or attempt to use a ticket for the more distant station with intent to avoid payment of the additional fare to such intermediate station. The liability to or infliction of any penalty incurred by the contravention of this Bye-Law shall not prejudice any right of the Board to treat such ticket as forfeited and to recover the full fare for the distance actually travelled by the offender.

I don't know how it could be enforced, but that does not mean it is not there.

    Nonsense.

If that is the fastest route at that time then that is the route that you take. There may not be an option via the WRC for several hours.

Any route that the journey planner issues is a valid route, given you would have seat reservations for each train.

It shows how little IE management understand their own services.

Looking at Cork-Galway for tomorrow, all fares via Heuston are €12.99 with Cork-Heuston €36.99

However NONE of the 5 listed itinerary are quicker than changing at LJ/Limerick or Portlaoise/Portarlington.

It is just leaving the door open for people to buy the cheaper fare to avoid the Cork-Dublin price.

It is also much cheaper than Cork-Portlaoise, Portarlington, Tullamore or Athlone

The journey planner should always show the fastest route for each departure, and if it is showing different routes with different journey times for the same departure time, then there's probably a computer glitch which would require reprogramming.

Irish ferries used to offer a day return to Holyhead from Dublin for, lets say, €10 while the single fare was €25. However, it was not possible to book it unless you used a credit card. If you failed to return, then they would charge back the extra €15.
