PLC nursing course and universities.

Hi everyone, I'll be starting my PLC FETAC nursing course in a weeks time which I am really excited about. I'm 18 and got my leaving cert results I got a B3 in English and a D3 in maths both in ordinary level. To apply to nursing in the UK the requirements for English and maths are a C3 or higher. I can do basic maths etc but formulas and long algebra sums is where I find it difficult, I find it's unfair that you can't apply if you haven't obtained the C3 in maths even though I will have worked so hard on my FETAC course.

I would love to study in Ireland but the courses are so oversubscribed, I would love to go to DUNDALK IT but I've also heard it's hard to get into. Has anyone any tips on how to get into an Irish uni? And if anyone knows any UK universities that accept FETAC nursing with a pass in maths etc.

    Thank you!

Nothing to stop you repeating Maths while you do your FETAC course.

Make sure you have the 8 distinctions to give yourself a realistic chance of geting in the FETAC route.

Hi thanks for the reply, I won't be repeating my maths as I'm scared if I repeated again I would fail, I felt very lucky I passed this years paper as it was very difficult.

It really wouldn't make any difference if you failed repeat Maths, as you could use your better mark, but up to you.
There will be fairly hefty Maths modules in your Pre-Nursing course and heftier again in Nursing itself, so it would be an idea to get more confident in Maths.

Someone told me that if you repeated maths and say you failed it the second time round, your first grade would not count any more. Once you repeat what ever you get is what ever you get and you can't go back, this is what put me off.

How would they know you'd failed it the second time unless you tell them? In general you can't add points from one year to another, but your Maths is a course requirement so it can be done again. The other option is to see will Dundalk (or wherever) accept a FETAC Maths module as the equivalent of the LC required standard. You could ask your PLC people about that.
