Westport to Achill not using the greenway

I'm looking for a little local route advice. Friends are doing the greenway at the weekend both ways and staying in Achill overnight between trips. I'll go back with them via the greenway from Achill to Westport. However I'd like to take the opportunity to explore the area having never cycled around Mayo. I was hoping someone who cycles down that way regularly could recommend a good route away from traffic, no more than circa 80 k's and with some great climbing that would get me from Westport to Achill not using the greenway.
Will be on a road bike so a reasonable paved surface would be welcome.

    Thanks

Westport to Achill via the main roads is about 50km ish anyway so I'm thinking any detour to take in a climb and stick to the 80km mark will be difficult to find (but I could be wrong here)

This is 97km but takes in a nice climb over to Tourmakeady. You'll be heading away from Achill to start with but loop back around.

Another route is to take in the Windy Gap from Castlebar from the steep side but you're looking at 110km for that

You could always just cycle to Achill direct and climb Minaun. It's all the climbing you'll need :)

I know the above is not exactly what you asked for but I wouldn't be overly familiar with the Newport /Mulranny parts of Mayo. There are plenty other posters here I'm sure with a much better knowledge of that part of Mayo

I was there last week and the main road is very busy and it's 100km/h, there are no easy ways around the mountains. You can detour around logh Furnace and join up with the Greenway if you want, although it's a mainly loose surface.

If I was you I would go greenway to Mullranney then hang a left and go round by Curraun which will give you a coastal route. WAW signs. And then do your climbing on Achill as said in above post. The costal route around the Island is a good test. There is no link roads from the Coast road to the roads north from Newport so unless you do a loop prior to Westport or Newport its a longway to Bellacorick and back via Bangor Erris to Ballycroy and Achill
