New megathread for the 2015/16 academic year. This thread is for all accommodation queries and posts related to either on-campus or off-campus accommodation.

If you have a room available for rent, feel free to advertise it here.

Remember! No phone numbers or e-mails to be posted on this thread. If you want to contact a poster, do it by PM please!

Here are some tips for finding a house to rent in Dublin. Good areas to look for accommodation for DCU are Drumcondra, Glasnevin, Phibsborough and Santry. All are relatively close walking/biking/public transport distance to DCU.

    1. Start browsing daft.ie etc. as soon as possible. There's a shortage of decent, affordable rental properties in Dublin at the moment so you've got to be on the ball. You can search for rooms in a house or you can search for a whole house if you join up with a few people to find a place.

    2. Never ever accept a room/house from online browsing only. If you don't live in Dublin, you're going to have to come up and look at places. There's really no way around this. Book a hostel in Dublin as soon as you get your offer and then start ringing and e-mailing places. Because competition is so tough, most won't give you a viewing time until the day before or day of the viewing so there's no point ringing a week in advance. Set up as many viewings as possible for the 2 days you'll be around Dublin. You've got to be persistent here and keep ringing and keep browsing online, even while you're waiting in between viewings! If you know someone who has a car this will be a HUGE help as it will let you fit many more viewings in the day than bussing or walking.

    3. Bring enough money for a deposit with you. Borrow from your parents if you need it, but have it in your pocket. Again, this is because of the competition at the moment. If there are several people viewing a property at once, the landlord might be more likely to sign up the person who has a deposit on hand rather than someone who won't have it for another week (and could potentially fall through in the meantime). It's all about making the landlord's life easy to get in somewhere!

    4. Be prepared to settle, to a certain degree. It is really, really, really hard to find somewhere that is 'perfect'. There'll always be something not 'right' about the properties you look at so it's a good idea to think beforehand about what you're willing to settle on. Are you willing to pay a slightly higher rent for a better location or newer/bigger house? Maybe you don't mind having a longer commute in the morning if it's cheap? Maybe you're not that bothered about a small room as long as the location and price are decent? Whatever it is, think about it before hand. It'll help you rule out what properties you definitely won't be happy in, and what ones might not be perfect but will work as a place to live for 9 months to a year.

Anyone able to tell me what gateway student village is like, looks to be very pricey, but is it worth the cost?

Hi Shf12345, I've moved your post into our accommodation megathread as the thread you originally posted in was a bit out of date. Things are very tough out there at the moment unfortunately. I live just up the road from Pat's and there are several posters around from the college trying to recruit landlords who may have free houses or free rooms etc. in houses. Have you tried contacting Pat's itself? They're obviously trying to get lists of available places so it could be very worth your time to give them a call and let them know you're looking.

For your viewings, try and bring a deposit and possibly even first month's rent with you. This might help beat some of the competition who don't have a deposit ready. Get your son to dress up a bit (shirt and pants) so he looks as professional as possible. Many landlords have their pick of tenants at the moment and will be looking for someone who looks like they will cause them as little hassle as possible! First impressions are everything at the moment. It might even be helpful for your son to bring a letter saying his parents will be guaranteeing his rent every month (if you are) to curb any concerns about a student not being able to meet their rental payments.

This might all sound a bit extreme but it's really tough at there and anything that might give your son a small edge is worth trying!

Hi overpower, are you talking about specific student accomm (on-campus or off-campus residences like Gateway?) or just areas for places to rent? For the latter, check out the info I posted in the top post about good areas to rent in that are handy for DCU.

Does anyone know of accommodation for two or more first year students (school friends)? They didn't get the lottery. It's a big move from rural Ireland to the city and they don't want to be living with strangers in the first year.

    Any type of accommodation considered!

    I do realise it's a big ask..

    Thanks in advance

Start looking on daft.ie asap. There are sometimes 2 bed apartments/flats available around Santry/Drumcondra/Phibsborough. Pricey enough (tough to get 2 beds under 1000 these days) but better than being homeless! They could also look for 1 beds with a twin room but I never really see any of those - it's generally a double room so really only suitable for a couple or 1 person. If they have another person then start looking for 3 beds in the suggested areas.

There are quite a number of single rooms available in houses in Drumcondra on daft.ie at the moment.

Anyone living in a house with spare room for a DCU first year male. Finding it really hard to be close to any students. Also seriously desperate for on campus, is there any chance of getting a place?

I have a couple rooms to let in Leixlip 20km or 8 train stops away from the Drumcondra Railway station. Very convenient for cyclists as you can bring your bike on the train. I have one standard room and one very large room and there are 2 bathrooms in the house. I can provide references for myself with my Airbnb account through which I let the rooms to tourists during the summer months.

Specifically I am looking for students who study Irish as part of their degree. The reason for this is this year I failed to secure a place in the university myself due to an oral Irish interview (for PME primary) I found it difficult to prepare for.

If you would be interested please send me a private message with information on your college course and year of study and I would be happy to send you my Airbnb account and arrange to show you the rooms.
