Advice on replacing horizon wifi

After a year of frustrating factory resets and the box allocating 169.x.x ip addresses, I am so sick of this wifi on the Horizon box.

Is it possible to turn off the wifi on the Horizon box itself and put in my own router? Do I need UPC to do anything as regards cabling, disconnecting etc or can I do this myself. I've done numerous factory resets and had the upc guys out twice but still same problem in that many devices cant connect to the wifi or keep dropping it. Thanks

Update: UPC are sending me out a router. Hopefully it will do the job...if not what one is recommended?

I bought a cheap Netgear router and plugged into my upc.
