New runner already bit fit, advice?

    Any tips on doing these? OR running in general?
    Just wondering any advice for a new runner? I've ran times, I run 30mins at a time, which i think i cover about 5kms, I've proper running runners and play lots of squash.
    Just wonder any tips?
    Like how long should i go without food before running?
    Should i do a little warm up?
    Should I drink plenty of water?
    Any stretches a total must before I collapse on the floor when I get home?
    Was going to use the parkruns as motivation to go running. Have 2 friends who just started running too.
    I'd like to get more fit for squash season that starts in October, I'd also like to give running a decent chance, tried before when not so fit and hated it and how hard it is, so if i at least do 3 times a week for 6 weeks i'll have given it a good chance.

    No seriously, would you consider a 10k plan? Now that you can already cover 5k a few times a week, you could look up one of the many many 10k plans online and follow one.

    Also, it might be a good idea to start a training log in the subforum here- you'll get top notch advice in that.

    For squash they say it's best to stick to around 5kms, no point us running longer, and I sure like the sound of it, so it would more I'd like to run 5kms faster and faster than add in more. I play squash 3 times a week maybe 5 hours a week. So it is my main focus.
    I ran 6kms in 30mins Sunday. Not sure if that is good or bad for a newbie. I did stop and walk and text message a few times.

    A few tips which others might like to add to:

    • Start every run slowly
    • It takes about 15 minutes before you feel ok on a run - just ignore how hard it feels up to that point.
    • Set a goal - ideally a race at least 6 weeks away.
    • Do a little bit less than what you could do i.e. don't kill yourself on every run
    • Most of your running should be slow and easy
    • Maintain good posture at all times
    • Fewer miles consistently is better than more miles intermittently
    • Runners are made over months and years not days and weeks
    • Follow a plan and stick to that plan
    • Run for time initially
    • Increase the amount of time that you run for by a few minutes every 2nd week
    • Take an easy week every so often.

    I'll leave my other post there but it's aimed towards someone who wants to develop their ability to run a 5k quickly whereas you want to develop your fitness for squash which is altogether a different proposition. If you like 5k is your 'long run' designed to develop a bit of stamina and endurance for squash. There's a place for it obviously but I can't imagine that it's going to form a huge part of the ideal training plan for a squash player.

    My coach said to do 3 days a week 30 mins a time for 6 weeks, then switch to more intense training.
    So i've been trying to give running a go for years, by trying i mean talking about it with a friend who runs a bit, so thought feck it give it a go see if after putting in 6 weeks you still don't like it.

    Sign up for a 5k race, it will give you a focus for the training. Else the parkruns are ideal too.
