    Hi,

Currently running 9 speed Sora and thinking of changing groupset as some of the components are getting a bit worn.

Do question is: what do I need to change to move to ultegra?
DÃ႒©railleur front and back, chainrings, shifters. Anything else?
Changed cassette already and put tiagra cassette on so assume it makes no difference.

Do I have yo change it all together? For instance could I change to ultegra dÃ႒©railleur this week, chainrings next week etc?

your front mech will be ok, youll defnatly need a new cassette, chain, rear mech and shifters. and possibly a new chainset,

Easier to just buy the full groupset, likely they'll come with the full cable kit.

    Hi Op,

Just curious are you jumping from Sora to Ultegra? wondering why such a leap, is the frame and wheelset you are running worth it? i.e. will the Ultegra addition compliment the bike? Even the latest Tiagra 4700 or 105 groupset would be a huge improvement over Sora without the move to Ultegra and expense.

Additionally, if you go from Sora to 11 speed (105 or ultegra), depending on the wheels you currently have (e.g. a lot came with Shimano R500s in the last few years) you may need to get a new rear wheel (and new front since they must match :D) for the wider cassette. 10 speed such as Tiagra 4700, or old 105 would not have this issue, as virtually any modern shimano-compatible wheel will be 8/9/10-speed compatible

    Thanks for the replies
I see tiagra 4700 10 speed for little under 400 euro. Reckon this be the best way to go?

If you can find out if your rear wheel can take an 11 speed, you can get the 105 for nearly the same price.

EDIT: full 105 groupset here for 377, not sure if they charge P&P and never used this crowd but doubt you'll do better anywhere else.

What is the spec of the rest of the bike?

Bike is a felt f85. I like it and suits my needs to even though temptation is always there to upgrade, I really would prefer to upgrade some of the components.
Chain, chainrings and derailleur need changing at some point as getting a bit worn so thought rather than spending money on them should look at upgrading the groupset.

Wheels are Alex rims r500's but have been toying with the idea of getting zonda's. Never considered second hand. May not be that much of a saving.

By the time you spend 400 on a groupset and 400 on wheels, and whatever it costs to have someone put it together for you, you won't be far off the cost of a new bike.

Didn't want to start a new thread as my query is related. If building a bike to a tight budget is there much difference in 105 & ultegra performance wise for a sportif/leisure user. Some say go with 105 and spend the difference on wheels. Others say mad not to go for ultegra groupset.

I went for 6800 Ultegra on my bike having actually bought the 5800 groupset and returning it in favour of 6800, however i have since ridden a 5800 bike and would have no qualms going for it in future, there is no difference in it and 6800 in terms of ease of use etc, the only differences are the colour and 260g weight difference which is not worth mentioning. Go for 5800 and spend the difference on wheels.

Thanks Cee Jay See. Cheaper to get the weight off my gut. Usually lads promote whatever they are running so appreciate the balanced view.
