I accidentally dropped my laptop and now it cannot access my operating system, won’t boot up etc etc. I am assuming my hard drive is goosed as there is a grinding kind of noise coming from it. What are my options? Can I just buy a replacement hard drive and replace it?

Yes you should be able to do that. Check to see if you still have a legible windows coa sticker on the base as this may be required to activate windows vista or windows 7. Windows 8 or 8.1 license information should be embedded on the main board. If you don't have recovery media there are ways to download a copy of windows which are legitimate once you have the appropriate licence.

Also if you don't use your laptop for storing a lot of large video files etc. then you might as well go for an SSD whilst you're at it.
They can take a lot more shock damage and will be the single best upgrade you will probably do to your laptop speedwise.
