Etape Connemara

Did this for the first time yesterday - its great. Its 'not a race' of course but an average speed of 41kph over 150km of Connemara hills for the lead group says it all I think.

I didn't go with the really fast guys but even in the second group there was a decent pace. The route was good and having just one food stop (visited twice) is a good way to go I think.

A small rant: my new pet hate are people that sit 3rd or 4th wheel in a fast group and refuse to take a turn. By all means wheelsuck at a sportive - I have no problem with that. But at least have the decency to sit at the back out of the way. Its a real pain having to pass 5 or 6 lazy arses every time you want to take a turn at the front.

Did everyone get caught up with the road works in Moycullen? And this would have lowered the average speed?

The section through the roadworks and the village was neutralised for everyone. The gardai allowed all the groups through on the way out, but had to stop on the way home.

Were you with the lead group at that point? Did this affect the result I wonder?

41kmph average speed for the first group....was it a pro peloton that done this, or the top guys at the Ras....because that pace is incredible, considering I think that route has a few spikes in it!!

I was a moto-marshall, not cycling. At the end I was with the second half of the fast group, we hit the red lights at the moycullen road works and all cyclists stopped. A lot of stragglers got back on here, but were quickly dropped again after the lights changed, so no, I wouldn't think the road works affected the result.
