My brother leaves his car with me in Dublin when he travels for work, now the tax is up on his car. I have my insurance on his car he is here so rarely he uses it as a named driver on my policy.

So the tax is up at the end of August, can I tax it even though the car is not in my name? Or do they care less?

I will probably buy it off him at some stage but he is not bothered at the moment so I'll hold on to the car when he is not around. I don't want to transfer it to my name in case he decides to come home and wants the car back. I would be putting a new owner on the car for no good reason.

    They don't care less.

One problem for you though down the line is if you need to make a claim you may have problems as the car is not in your name so you have no insurable interest in it.

    Thanks for that.

That is a problem, I am responsible for all bills as a condition of holding the car - its handy for both of us TBH. Therefore for insurance I said I was the beneficial owner, but maybe I should transfer it to my name rather than risking a claim and the claim being turned down if the car is not in my name.

In the meantime I'll tax it anyway to keep me out of trouble on that front.....
