Are there many airports around with short runways

    Are there many short commercial airports around the developed world close to major cities(i.e. right beside as opposed to a 50 or 100km trek away) with runways which are too short for 737s/A320 sized aircraft.
    Is there a list of such airports anywhere?
    London City is an obvious example although exceptional in being so close to such a large city.

    Stockholm Bromma would be another, there is an airport in Toronto City but I can't remember the name of it.

    Midway's runways - all under 2km, some significantly so - have been claimed to be too short for fully laden 738s and the primary reason that Southwest has ordered 737MAX7s. Its one of the few examples where its not a specialist service airport although it isn't the main airport for Chicago obviously.

    I assume you are going to have a problem with such airports as they have a runway that "is too short".
    Any airport developed over the last 20 years (even 30 yrs ago) which has a 'short runway' would be a huge blunder. But the majority of airports were originally developed in the 50's and 60's when air travel was expanding rapidly. The ubiquitous B737/A320 and indeed the (B777) were not a factor then.
    Land may not have been procured in advance, or indeed the city may have grown outwards toward the airport.
    Just looking at runway length versus proximity to the city doesn't make a strong correlation.

    Define a "major city"....e.g. a major city in Ireland probably wouldn't be a major city in the USA, but the opposite could well be true.

    London City has planes designed with it pretty much in mind. There wouldn't be such a push for large(ish) steep approach aircraft if LCY didn't exist.

    Ryanair pulled out of one of the Belfast airports because they couldn't get a fully loaded B738 off it on flights to the continent. I've heard MOL say if it was extended they would return there.

    Bern-Belp would be another that may fall into this category. While Bern only has a population of circa 140k, there would be over 2million residents in a 100km radius.

    Mannheim and speyer are both examples of large cities which have or had small airports. If it were not for frankurt being such a monster hub with good connectivity to those cities then they would have been improved. Mannheim in particular was downright dangerous.

    Jorge Newbery Buenos Aires is comparably short.
    Rio De Janeiro Santos Dumont too.

    Mannheim certainly is small, just 1066 meters of asphalt.
