Will Saorview box work in the north?

We have a Freeview HD box and it can pick up RTE etc but the picture often breaks up and is unwatchable. We get our TV signal through a roof aerial.

Would a Saorview box work / improve the picture quality and reliability? We are just over the border so wouldn't have to go too far to get one.

A Saorview approved box won't do anything to improve the signal, no.

Do you only have 1 set of Saorview services on the Freeview box, or are there duplicates?

Do you know if you have a dedicated aerial for transmissions from the south, & where it might be pointed?

Picture breakup will be related to signal/reception issues, aerial/aerial alignment/cabling etc. Get an installer to check it out if you can't DIY.

A Saorview STB is very highly unlikely to improve your Saorview reception on its own over a Freeview HD receiver.

By default a Freeview HD receiver will (if set up for UK channels) place Saorview channels starting at 800 onwards. Like Thurston said, check to see if you have more than one version of Saorview channels in this 8xx range, as this would indicate reception of these channels from multiple transmitters.

Also depending on location, you might be able to receive SD versions of RTÉ1, RTÉ2 & TG4 with a Freeview HD receiver from the north though some content will be blocked out e.g. UEFA Champions League soccer. Interestingly the picture quality of TG4 from the RNI1 multiplex on Freeview is better than that on Saorview.

Regarding geo-blocking on RNII multiplex, any reason why Home and Away is geo-blocked on this and not Neighbours as Channel 5 hold UK rights for both these programmes?

A Saorview box will ignore the 38 blank channel headers that RTE/2RN have inserted into the signal while a Freeview box will not. So, with a Saorview box all Freeview channels will be in the 800s, while a Freeview box will have all the Saorview channels in the 800s in random order, mixed together with 38 crap headers plus 18 radio channels and 18 blank radio channels. I think it is easier to sort out the Saorview situation than the Freeview situation, but both are bad. I am not sure what will happen with the SSU channels, and will depend on the order that the muxes are received.

With the Panasonic range of Freeview receivers the UK channels will be stored in their correct LCN's, the Saorview channels are stored in the 800s but they can be easily moved into any location you require. I believe from posts here the Humax terrestrial receivers won't allow Saorview sorting below 800.

My point is about all the crap RTE/2RN are putting into the Saorview signal that is ignored by an approved Saorview receiver but not otherwise.

None of that is relevant to the reception strength & quality of DTT signals that the OP was concerned about.
