James try Seamus McGrath Motors out in the East Link Business Park, off the Ballysimon Road. Haven't used them myself but they have a good reputation.

If the €370 quote is for decent quality parts then you should probably go for it.

If you keep looking for the cheapest price you might find someone to do it cheaper but what if they are using substandard parts?

Only last week we had a 1.9TDI Seat in for repair after the spurious aftermarket timing belt tensioner fitted at the last belt change (not by us might I add) fell apart. Result was 8 bent valves and a €1300 repair bill. That would never have happened if an OE or OEM belt kit had been used.

I not really looking for a cheap job/work that's not even the last option. Vw would be using OE part but I wonder about this place that gave me the 370 quote. They are "Irelands leading independent BMW, Mini, Mercedes, VW and Audi specialists"

Why don't you ask them what brand of kit and pump they use?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,089 ✭✭✭JAMES VTI S

What manufactur would be good to use.

If that's the BMW specialist in Abbeyfeale then they have a fairly good name over on one of the BMW forums, but they are too far away from me so have no personal experience.

They are just back the road from me, 10 minutes.

What manufactur would be good to use.

For the timing belt kit Gates, Continental or Dayco would be fine. Continental or Dayco are the OE suppliers to VW for your engine. One advantage of the genuine VW kit is that it is covered by a 2 year warranty whereas most of the aftermarket suppliers are just 1 year.

For the water pump it's more difficult to find a decent aftermarket supplier for a 1.9TDI. The only aftermarket supplier I would have any confidence in is Hepu but they are actually more expensive than the VW exchange water pump.

We just use genuine parts on them. Less headaches in the long run.

    That's sound advise! 2 years I a nice warranty.

Have to agree with George on the water pumps , Hepu are great quality but more expensive than dealer exchange and haven't any faith in any other brands of pumps at the moment have seen to many examples of premature failure.

My hepu water pump failed within a week or so of being fitted.
