Hi, looking for advice on memory storage for the WII U 8gb console. It's used by two young children, they won't be downloading any games for it or playing online.
We don't use the other apps on it (netflix, YouTube) . Usually when they buy a new disc , the software needs to be updated, there's never enough space so they end up reluctantly having to delete all their gaming history ( levels, earned characters etc)
Can an SD card solve my problems or will they need an external hard drive?

As the WII U can read any USB something like this for game saves and updates will do the job 16GB double whats in the WII U and considering you wont be download games its a perfect size for updates and saves.

Back when i got a PS2 in 01 all i had was a 8MB card for saving games LoL.

Any usb drive will work grand. This is the one I have in mine, http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/2459422/Trail/searchtext%3ESANDISK+.htm

But if you're not planning on downloading any games you won't need one that size.

Thanks very much for your replies. I'm relieved it's not gonna cost too much as well! !
We need to buy an extra control, so the kids can play together rather than waiting for turns like they have been, so for this to work we also need to get a sensor bar. Searched high and low today and nowhere has one, Sm*ths was the only one who could tell us when they'll have them in, which is another 2-3 weeks :-/
I found one on ebay, it's not made by nintendo so not sure what to make of it?
Is it always necessary to use only nintendo accessories or will third party/ generics be ok?? Do they damage the consoles?
Opinions on whether this might be ok or a definite no will be most appreciated
I can't post links so can only paste the description!

"The ZedLabz compatible sensor bar can be used with Wii U and Wii consoles, perfect if you have the Wii U basic package which does not include the sensor bar as standard.

The sensor bar will also work with the premium pack Wii U and the original Wii console, a great replacement if your original sensor bar is lost, broken or damaged.

It works just like the original sensor bar with simple plug and play installation, it does not require batteries or any power adapter.

The motion sensor comes complete with a clear coloured stand.

You can adjust the position the sensor bar to above or below the TV set and also adjust the sensitivity via the Wii consoles settings menu.

Compatible with all Wii controllers including Wii U controllers, motion plus controllers and other Wii controller addons."

All that a sensor bar is is two infrared LEDs in a plastic case, so you don't need the official nintendo one, any aul one will do the exact same job.

Infact I remember putting two candles in front of the telly years ago and it mostly worked! (wouldn't recommend it though :P)

Lol is that all they are!! I'll get it online so as i don't think the kids will wait another 2 weeks for it, we've already been putting it off for weeks, and they were so disappointed today when no where had it!
would you recommend only genuine nintendo controls or would compatible generic brands do the job or cause havoc? We need the basic remote, (like the TV one) but I've spotted from the same online shop as the sensor, the controller pro , which is what they really wanted but weren't getting it cos of the price but the one i see online is €12. As far as i can make it connects to the remote control one, so will probably get the genuine remote as they had it today in one shop , but buy the generic controller pro. Would this be advisable ? Or a big No No? ?

Which games do they want to play together? Most Wii U games don't need a sensor bar.

I thought you needed the sensor bar once you introduced a control other other than the game pad?
They only have a few games so it would be either one of these : super smash bros, Mario karts 8, Mario 3D world and nintendo land. They got a loan of their cousins wii party but it's not recognised without a wii control

Ok. For Wii U there are 3 types of controllers. The GamePad (which comes with the console), the Wii Remote (looks like a remote control) and the Pro Controller (kind of like the gamepad without the screen). The Wii Remote has two versions: one with motionplus and one without, also you can extend the Wii Remote with additional things like the Nunchuck which adds a stick and two more buttons.

Smash Bros, Mario Kart 8 and Mario 3d World do not require the sensor bar. They just need another controller (either a Wii Remote or a Pro Controller). Nintendoland is the complicated one! Firstly, it doesn't support the Pro Controller, so you need Wii Remotes for multiplayer. There are 6 multiplayer games: Zelda, Pikmin, Metroid, Mario, Luigi and Animal. Pikmin, Mario, Luigi and Animal will work fine without the sensor bar and with any type of Wii Remote. Zelda and Metroid both require a sensor bar, then Zelda requires a Motionplus Wii Remote while Metroid requires the Nunchuck addon. I've never played Wii Party so I've no idea about it.

Thanks a mil for your help. As it's the cheapest accessory, i might get it just incase any future games require it. Seen it for €3!! So it looks like I will need to get the remote control and the pro controller.
Would it be necessary that these be nintendo ones or would an unbranded one do the job or cause havoc :-/
