Windows 10 Upgrade Failing Via Windows Update

    Hey lads,

I can't upgrade to Win 10 from my Win 7 machine for some reason - it does the update, downloads it all, when it goes to reboot the BIOS screen flickers as normal, then briefly flashes a Win 10 logo after a setup screen, then goes back to BIOS screen and just loads up Win 7

The error I'm getting is :

    WindowsUpdate C1900101-20017

    Anyone any ideas?

I personally think something in the BIOS is preventing the flash, had a look at all my drives and they are set to AHCI...

Machine is a self build, motherboard is Asus H81M ITX WiFi....

First hit on a Bing search suggests disabling or uninstalling 3rd party A/V that might be interfering with the process. Which anti-virus are you using?

It's also a good idea to disconnect any USB devices other than mouse and keyboard before upgrading.

I have Security Essentials and real time protection is disabled...

Edit : Actually uninstalled it and practically everything else on the machine, even disconnected the LAN on reboot and its still not going through, really annoying!

See if I just download the ISO and stick it on a key, surely I'll be prompted for a Win 10 key - will my Win 7 licence suffice? I doubt it....

Have you tried downloading the W10 ISO, extracting it locally and running the setup.exe from within to begin the upgrade instead of the WU route? You shouldn't be prompted for a key and if you are just skip it and the license should activate shortly after completing the upgrade (run slmgr/dli from an elevated command shell for confirmation).

Try remove your graphics card and use mobo graphics. Remove CD drive and any other periperhals too. Those worked for me.

Is there a different outcome running set up.exe from "within" or booting from the ISO?

I think I'm after sorting it - I managed to pass a point I couldn't get to via having it on the USB, I had to update the UEFI on the Bios via the lan cable to get it to progress past the first splash screen of 10, so at the moment I rebooted back to 7 so I'm trying to go via Win update and once it's activated I will do a fresh install...

    Fingers crossed! :)

    Yup....

    That done it!

Can't believe all it was needing was a BIOS update - I will leave this here if someone else with same Asus H81M ITX board is having the same issue, feel like a eejit.... :/

    Edit :

I also notice windows 10 has a handy "nuclear reset your PC" mode that eradicates the previous install handy enough... (I done that after 10 activated)

It can do it deleting everything and making previous files unrecoverable or just reinstall the OS option over the installation - it warned me I couldn't revert to my Win 7 install but that's fine, I have that on USB should needs be.... :)

No I don't believe so, but it's a little easier.

FWIW, for any recent laptop or desktop, before committing to the W10 upgrade, it will be worth checking on the manufacturer's site to see if there are any specific drivers, or BIOS upgrades that are needed for W10, as it's very possible that they may not be picked up by Windows Update, especially for BIOS updates, and the age of the machine is not a reliable indication.

The laptop I have here (ACER E5) was only put into use in March, yet there is a BIOS update that is required to recognise Win10, I don't know what the scenario would have been if I had allowed the update to proceed before installing the new BIOS, but as it specifically mentions that it's needed for Win10, the potential for failure of the 10 install would be higher than I am comfortable about. There are also 3 driver updates which are being promoted for Win10, and as they relate to the network and CPU, it's very possible that a Win10 upgrade would not have been completely successful without these drivers.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁
