I really think we need somewhere to discuss some of our top Amateur players and competitions.

At the weekend Ireland retained the Home Internationals in Royal Portrush, this is a huge win the week before the Walker Cup side will be selected which will be played at Royal Lytham and St Annes. Ireland will potentially have a record of 5 players selected, Hume, Moynihan, Dunne, Hurley and Sharvin.

The US Amateur starts tomorrow at Olympia Fields, where Dunne, Hurley and Sharvin could cement there places with a good performance. These 3 did not compete in the Home Internationals because of the US Amateur, which makes the win even more impressive.

Irish amateur close championship starts on Tuesday as well in Tramore.

Not too sure how many of the victorious home international team will be playing as they have had a hectic schedule lately but should be a good field regardless.

Stuart Grehan, Alex Gleeson, Robin Dawson and Colin Fairweather are all I can see that are playing from the Home International team.

Grehan and Dawson are also playing the Leinster Senior Cup final today for Maynooth University against Portmarnock, they really do have an unbelievably hectic schedule.

Alan Lowry, who is also on the MU Senior Cup team and who recently won the Mullingar Scratch Cup will also be playing the Irish Close.

Obviously Maynooth Uni is a GUI affiliated club, and as there is no other requirement other than been a member of an affiliated club, then you can play for whomever you choose as long as you meet that requirement.

U.S. Amateur live scoring available here - http://www.usga.org/championships/2015/u-s--amateur/scoring.html

Play starting soon. Huge field so making the Match Play section will be a good achievement.

I was just talking to my brother, who was on the Tullamore Senior Cup team and he just told me that Stuart had to play for Maynooth.

Stuart did play for Tullamore in the Barton Shield but that was because Maynooth did not enter a team.

Round 1 finished. Dunne T27 at +1, Hurley and Sharvin T40 at +2. Very solid rounds by all.

I think that was just after the morning rounds were in as they are now T49 and T78 respectively.

Hopefully at least one will make the knockout stages.

So Paul Dunne is certainly in the knock out stages at T16 (Level). Fantastic for him.

Hurley is updated as T78 (+4) and Sharvin at T97 (+5) after 9 holes as the round wasnt finished.

    Anyone know
    1. What they actually finished on when bad light stopped play?
    2. How do they sort out ties? Currently there are 23 people on +3 looking for 9 places?

The tie process is really simple.....

In a match-play event preceded by a stroke-play qualifying round or rounds, the number of competitors tied for the last place can be significant. In USGA championships played under such a format, the entry forms state with regard to the qualifying competition the following: “A tie for last spot will be decided immediately by a hole-by-hole play-off.” normally, there should be no more than five competitors in any group in such a playoff. Thus, if there are seven competitors playing off, the Committee should divide them into a group of three and a group of four. Players are grouped and tee off in the order of finish in the previous round or as listed on the summary sheet on the scoreboard. A hole-by-hole playoff with seven competitors playing off, for example, for four places works as follows: Group 1, comprising A, B and C play the first hole and then wait for Group 2, comprising D, E, F and G, to play the first hole. A, C and F score 4 at the first hole, B, D and G score 5 and E scores 6. Based on this result, A, C and F have won places, E is eliminated and B, D and G must play on for the remaining place. Assuming there was to be 64 players in match play, players A, C and F should be given the 61st, 62nd and 63rd positions in the draw respectively. The eventual qualifier from among B, D and G would receive the 64th position. Even if there are only two competitors in such a play-off, under the Rules, the play-off is conducted at stroke play.

Jeysus, sounds like it could be a long wait hanging around for 23 lads to play one hole, to only then move on to the next!

Great stuff for Dunners though. Delighted for him

Hurley is +4 and Sharvin is +5. Both have played 16 holes. +3 will make it into the playoff. 18 is a definite birdie chance so Hurley has a good chance of getting to +3.

Great for Dunne to have qualified comfortably already.

Hurley has just finished Bogey, Bogey so he will miss the cut.

Unfortunately neither of them made it.

Hurley finished bogey bogey to finish +5
Sharvin finished birdied par to finish +4 and miss playoff by one.

Still great effort by the two lads.

I see one English lad made the playoffs. Wonder does this affect Walker Cup selection at all.

ETA.... Sorry I hadnt noticed above entry for some reason.

So it looks like 19 lads in the playoff for 10 spots in the knockouts!

Dunners finishes T14th. Class in a field of 312 of the worlds best

Dunne wins 2 up. Into the last 32 now. Great achievement to get this far even.

I was supposed to be going to the Walker Cup this year, I was looking forward to it more than going to the Open but a friends wedding is on the same weekend so I can't go.

Young Lowry is getting bate out the gate in the first round of the matchplay anyway. 7 down after 9!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 517 ✭✭✭benji79

His opponent was -7 for the front nine

Lowry was -1 after 10 holes and 6 down. The joys of matchplay!!!!

    Hi all,

    New poster here!

Great to see Dunners do so well in US Amateur, 1UP thru 4 holes so far this afternoon in his Round of 16 match. Would be great to make it to last 8,4,2 or even 1 :) All looks good for Walker Cup Selection from an Irish perspective. Hard luck to both Sharvin and Hurley, who were pretty close to the cut line.

The Close in Tramore looks like it's shaping up to be a decent tournament. Looking at the performances and the draw, I would have to fancy Robbie Cannon or Robin Dawson at this stage.

Another local favourite, Eddie Power, went out on 19th earlier. What a story this would have been as Eddie won the first of his first three Irish Close in Tramore in 1987, and followed it up in Enniscrone and The Island in 1993 and 1998 (playing out of Kilkenny GC) respectively. What made this one special was his 16 year old son, Kevin, also made it through the Qualifying Rounds and onto round two, where he was also beaten this morning. Would have made for a lovely story, but alas, not to be!!

Just saw dechambau swing at US amature, unconventional to say the least but he must be doing something right (a/s in his match atm)

There is actually a thread on his swing here already, I can't link it because I'm on my phone but just search his name and it should come up, some pretty interesting stuff in it. He is the NCAA men's champion so he must be doing something right.

    Dunne now 2 up.

Jon Rahm looks a really good player, he played a couple PGA Tour events earlier in the year, definitely has a big future, he is 3 up.

Irish Close final has just begun, Tiarnan McLarnon 2 up through 2 holes on Alex Gleeson.

Ireland secure 5 members on the Walker Cup side for the first time in its 93 year history. Moynihan, Dunne, Sharvin, Hurley and Hume.
