Hi, i was wondering could anyone help me put an age on this chain i have.
All i know about it is that it was my great grandfathers and he used to wear it for working in Goodbody's flour mill in Clara, Co Offaly, which was built in 1864.
The link in the picture has a lion passant, an anchor and the letter a on it as far as i can tell.
The bar has the lion passant, the letter a and then the letters F&S.
Then each link has the lion passant stamped on it.
Any info would be great, thanks.

Would need a closer image but its more than likely 1900-1901, is the letter a in a square or a circle?

    Yes ... 1901
But be aware that the chains and watches are frequently swapped during the generations due to breakages and the likes.

Open the back of the watch gently to reveal the hallmarks on the case of the watch.
Theres a much better chance that the watch (movement) is integral with the case.

Also the hall marks should be larger and better spaced.
Due to the fact that the interior cover is protected from wear you should find crisp clear marks , and very often scratch marks from a jeweller or even an assay tester.

As a general rule every seperate piece over a gram in weight will carry an individual mark

Post a pic and an image of the dial !
