    Hi,

After one month.. I get some problems with upc.. problem to delivery my parcel, bugged modem technicolor (dhcp freeze my network), exchange of my modem with the "beautiful cisco epc3925" (generaiton 1990 like my aol 56kb).

5ghz radio band bugged (I can't enable, or I didn't see my modem).

And now, I haven't internet "DNS Probe error, no internet". The problem come from UPC (they didn't set the good mac adresse ? Prob with the ip public ?). I'm very frustated, when I see all this incompetence. A network technician will come soon.. Funny, it's my main job.. I hope he knows openbsd.

After that I think to stop with UPC... (block with my bank) Because I haven't received a good connection to internet after 1month, and only this ****in cisco modem.

Can I change the fiber box for another ISP ? what's the best solution ?

If you were a network tech you'd know its not a fibre box...

Add a fan to your cisco, bridge it out, put in a real router. Job done.

The Cisco modem they've supplied is pretty much cable industry standard stuff. They normally work reliably.

A lot of cable company type equipment tends to be ugly. That's just the industry culture for some reason.

    They're a standard EuroDOCSIS 3.0 cable modem.

The tech will not know anything about OpenBSD. That's way way beyond their job description.
He/she will be a cable installation tech. They know how to troubleshoot the modem and the RF signals on the cable network.

Also absolutely no ISP will troubleshoot your local network. If there's a working modem and Internet connection that's all they can really do.

They'll test it without your network from the wifi and Ethernet ports and if that's working, that's their contractual obligations met.

If two modems haven't worked, it's likely there's a wiring issue which they will resolve. It could be something as simple as a filter or a splitter or it could be that the physical cable needs to be replaced.

Sometimes old wiring from the main UPC trunk outside may be unsuitable for cable modem services as it was originally installed for analogue television 30 years ago. They just replace it.

Also UPC is a Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) network. Like almost all cable companies, there's no fibre in your home. It's out on the street.

The other alternative is generally eircom's "efibre" or another reseller of the service like Vodafone @ Home etc etc

That's "up to" 100mbit/s (depends on how far you are from a box on the street) and it's using vectored VDSL2

It's FTTC (fibre to the cabinet).

    ---

You're probably best to keep pushing UPC (try their forum on boards) to fix the issue rather than changing ISP.

Demand a refund for the period when you've had no service though. It's only fair.

Ok thanks you for your informations Spacetime.

Mhh I ddidn't think it's a prob in my local network. I already did 2 reset factory (that work fine with my last modem). Now all my equipments, like my desktop, labtop, tablet doesn't work. I think it's a problem with my IP public, mac adresse in the DNS (?)

I tried to change with google DNS and opendns, same problem

I flush the DNS cache in my computer.

    "Dns probe finished no internet."

    So ?

Yes of course, I need to make a bridge with an other router (but it's 200€ if I want my ac wireless :/ )

See here for information on how to debug various issues with UPC equipment:

BTW The Archer C8, an excellent 802.11ac router costs just €105 on Amazon.

Sounds like you are on IPv6 with DS-Lite.

I've noticed the IPv6 route seemed to "drop" randomly on UPC which means IPv6 traffic stopped flowing and since the first thing your browser tries to do is a DNS lookup, this naturally will be the failure message as it will fail at this step. A reboot of the cable modem would fix it - only for it to fail again some time later.

Myself I got moved back to native IPv4 and everything hunky dory since.
