Can someone please help. I got married 2 weeks ago. I gave my dslr to a family member to take shots around the wedding. We had a photographer too. Problem im having is Ive go about 6gb of raw photos. all of which when I try to open using Photoshop, corel, irfan view and Canons Software shows up no image. Im guessing the sd card got corrupted in some way. Has anybody got any advice on how to retrieve the images. Please see below a link to some of the image files.

Did you format the card before use?

Files do seem to be corrupt.

yeah I formatted it as soon as I bought it. Its 128gb, Ive about 30gb of photos on it that are fine, and Ive taken a few since just to check and theyre coming up fine. Would you know of any software that can fix these files. Theyre all big files so Im guessing the info is there, it just needs to be translated

1 thing i did... stupidly... was edit some pictures and save them back onto the card. I know now this can lead to problems. Its just strange that pictures taken the morning of the wedding are fine. Its literaly just the ones from the reception

no joy unfortuneately. Would any of you know any companies that could do it. I understand off the shelf software and especially freeware might not be good enough

    128GB!!! WOW

Even on a full frame camera with a high density sensor that is huge.

Are you downloading the files with a card reader? If not maybe try that in case the camera is introducing errors in the transfer (long shot)

Good practice is to download files at the end of each shoot and then to format the card when returning it to the camera. Do not delete or edit files in camera. Using multiple smaller cards is preferable to one large card as it minimises the loss in the case of card corruption. The problem is that the damage has now been done. I know there are services to do data recovery here, as so there will be some over there too.

Ah lesson learned. I wasnt gonna bring the camera but one of the lads decided it might be a good idea. I had my manual settings shooting raw. I just switched to auto because they didnt really know how to use it. I prob should have changed it to jpeg too. Ah Ive a card reader in my laptop and its showing no preview or image not available.

Ive emailed a few companies to see if they can help. hopefully they get back to me as i dont think off the shelf software is gonna work

128GB Card? Would I hazzard a guess and say it is a non premium brand card?

That's strange because AFAIK when you shift over to Auto on your camera it automatically changes the images to jpegs.....

I doubt that. Auto should only affect exposure settings, not storage or format settings.

No joy here with DPP and Paint Shop Pro. Some sata is there but it appears that it is either corrupt or not fully written.

No you're right, it was one of the custom functions I accidentally switched to with my 5DmkII that gave me jpegs. Thank crunchie for the locking dial on the mkIII.

Did you try putting them back into your photo software and converting them to Jpeg?? (Use 'Save As' or 'Convert' tab )
They're still showing on that link as CR2 files (Canon Raw) and not a huge amount of programs use or facilitate that as standard. 3rd party programs that are supposed to open them most likely won't do so if there's any info missing
Barring that you may need to download a file converter and see if that works.

There is a possibility that they're corrupted but you can still try to recover them using Recuva or the cards own recovery program if it has one. At least with the size of that card they should be still there and won't be over-written yet!!

    Good luck !!!

If you put the card in the camera, can you view the images there? If nothing shows up in the camera, then it's possible that they were never saved properly to the card in the first place. With a card that size though, you should be able to save in Raw and jpg simultaneously, which is handy as it saves you having to convert everything later.

If it didn't save them properly when shooting, then it could be that the SD Card is dodgy, so I'd be wary of using it again.

    Cheers for all the replies.

Yep yer right its non premium. I was using it in my surface and decided to put it in a cradle and use it in the camera instead. I formatted it first though

Its not the software opening the file thats the problem. I used the camera that morning and most of them shots are fine. Its strange because I could look through the photos taken earlier in the night and at the end of the night they were showing up an error. So im guessing they did save.

What Im guessing is the guys taking the pics took 3 or 4 in very quick succession, this will almost stall the camera whilst its writing to the card. Id say they turned it off and turned it back on again. It was working fine up until about 12.30 am then it just crashed

Im trying to open them with exiftool at the mo and its throwing back File format error

(Coming a bit late to this).

I downloaded the samples you posted and compressed them all with WinZip to see how much actual content they contained. Not too good...

The 100% compression rate and reduction from 18 MB to about 17 Kb means the files are essentially empty - the one I checked at random was full of zeros. There's a bit of data in the first two, but likely still plenty of zeros there also.

Unfortunately, not much you can do about it. You might be able to retrieve something from the original SD card if its only the file table that has been messed up.

I must try that with the card. If there's something there what could I expect it to compress too?

I have accepted defeat so anything now is just a bonus. Would there be any companies that could do this
