feeding silage with fork question

    Last time i fed with fork i put the bale flat,

    Trimmed the plastic half way down all around, started picking at the top, yeah the forkfulls at the beginning are bitty but u eventually get going,

    Reason why i so it this way,
    Standing bales up years ago caused me hassle with it unravelling on itself too fast, harder to fork out, gets stuck.


    Have bales changed? Ie double chop etc , would it make a difference, was thinking of trying standing them again, just to see if it's easier,

    What ye do?

    We double chop, so I use a grape (four prong!:P) to fork it out when I'm on feeding duty. Always circled and tightened with rope after foddering to prevent more falling down. It depends on which pen the bale is situated at as to how I feed them too. Whatever pen it's in front of is fed last in order to tidy up the bale to a clean flake for next time.

    For me unchopped stuff is a pain in the hole to feed although it only takes half the time.

    Hay knife is the only job! (Unless of course ya have a splitter :D) if bales are well chopped a wheel barrow full of silage is handier manouver then fork fulls.
    The use of old style cow stables for a few of the smaller weanlings has me well versed in such scenarios.
