Pain after Deep Filling (sorry)

Sorry to put up another thread about deep fillings, I read the sticky but I have a question.
Its been 9 days since my deep filling and I'm still sore. My dentist told me to expect that the nerve will be irritated (and sore) and for a while after and to come back if there's any problems.
What sort of time frame are we talking about here? Is 9 days too long? The dentist said the decay was below the gum line and I'd more than likely have to have it extracted at some point.
I'm extremely nervous, so I'm trying to prepare my mind about what I should expect the next visit! I hate surprises in the dentist so I'd like to be prepared if they will just take it out at the next visit if the pain persists, or will it need antibiotics first?
The pain is mostly in the cheekbone above the (upper) tooth and the area around it. (I'm prone to feeling upper toothaches in my sinuses)
Thanks for taking the time to read through this!

Sometimes it could take as much as 4-5 weeks to settle, next logical step if not recovered will be root canal

Thanks for your reply. That's good to know. I thought my time was up already :/:)
The dentist said the decay was so bad a root canal wouldn't be possible. Do you think a second opinion would be recommended?

I had two deep fillings in the same tooth both kept hitting the nerve eventually I decided to take the tooth out as I felt a root canal was too expensive. Having said that after getting them initially the pain would go after a few weeks but would reoccur again a few weeks later. Good luck to you though hope yours is more successful :)

No harm in second opinion , but if it can't be saved then why fill in the first place , not every dentist does root canal especially if it is a difficult or complicated case , since I haven't seen your X-rays or clinical pic , can only make a generalised comment

The same thing happened me, got a filling 3 weeks ago, all was fine until last week, couldn't drink anything hot or cold, then started waking with pain and had a constant tooth ache, went back to the dentist today and got the tooth out, she said there was an abcess growing on the root of my tooth. It was my first extraction and I thought it was much easier than filling. Hopefully it will settle for you soon.

Ok that tooth never really calmed down and I've had bad sinus pain since it was filled. I went to the GP (scared of dentist) and I'm on antibiotics for suspected sinus infection.
My jaw is very sore now (7th day of antibiotics amoxicillin/clavulanic acid 500/125mg.)
Who do I go see now? The GP or dentist??
Thanks very much for the info. It's really appreciated!

Edited to add: I'm also a jaw clencher so that May have something to do with jaw pain and headaches?

    Here's an update:
I sucked it up and went to dentist, looks like the pain is down to clenching my teeth. Got fitted for a night guard and got the fillings filed down to relieve the pressure. No sign of a dental abscess.
    Happy days :)
