Thinking of cancelling our Sky subscription, but when I removed the card to see what channels we got as if unsubscribed we could not watch RTE.
It said that you needed you insert your Sky card.

Now, if we cancel Sky but still have the card in, would we be able to watch RTE?

No uk fta channels only. You'd need to use saorview to watch rte.

You need an aerial to get irish stations and a TV with mpeg4 tuner or a saorview set top box

Nuts, was hoping that wouldn't be the case.

Got the aerial and mpeg4 tv, but the only channel can't pick up on saorview is RTE1.
    :(

I'm with sky so I have rte on the sky epg. I tried the saorview on the TV just to see what it was like and like yourself, no rte1 either. I've tried rescan after rescan but no sign of rte1 turning up.

Probably your Saorview signal isn't good enough.

What kind of aerial is it &, do you have it plugged directly into the TV or via the Sky box RF connections? (Or IO link RF, if the box doesn't have RFs.)

Bog standard aerial I think straight into TV.

Irish channels are subscription on satellite at 28˚E. Complain to your government and RTE, though it won't do any good. They will say it is for rights reasons. Fair enough but as least sky should provide ftv cards as they do in the UK.

I mean is it indoor, outdoor, maybe it's just a set-top indoor type? It'll be hit & miss if you can get satisfactory reception with such an aerial.

If you want them for free, Saorview is the way to go. As mentioned already in this thread, you'll need a suitable aerial & TV or box.

There is also the Saorsat service, but it's only RTE & TG4, & needs a different dish setup aligned on a different satellite position to the UK channels.

I had a similar prob with my TV when scanning for stations auto scan never pocked up rte1. I ended up doing a manual scan of most of the channels and it found rte1 on a different channel to the rest of the sations with
perfect picture. Maybe you have tried a manual scan already.

The Saorview services are divided between 2 multiplexes, carried on 2 separate UHF channels. RTE1, RTE1 +1, RTE jr., & UTV Ireland are in 1 of them, with the remaining services in the other.

This may be a stupid questuon but have you looked further down the channel listing in Saorview as the channel list is not organised and it might be the RTE1 is there but you just didnt go down the listings.

What do you mean 'the channel list is not organised'? It will be if the receiver is Saorview approved, & Ireland chosen as country.

Its a Tv and not everyone has their tv set up as Ireland.

Can't you ask sky for an Irish Sky card that allows one to watch the Irish channels? I think
    you can.

No the Irish channels are part of Skys subscription via their platform.

Well you should have said the channel list may not be organised, depending how the TV is set up, not that Saorview has no organisation at all. (Not that it needs it much, with all that's available.)

You mean like a reduced sub. rate, not free? I think this was mentioned here in the past, though doesn't seem to have been widely known, & probably only existed for a brief period.

Was probably just an offer made to try stop people cancelling completely, let them keep the Irish channels for a small charge.

Just a bit unfair to say there is no organisation to the channel list, when it's only because your receiver isn't following the network specs. on logical channel numbering.

Main problem it causes is when all those 'test' services show up in the list, they wouldn't be visible in the channel list, or selectable by the programme up/down buttons if the receiver is following the Saorview (NorDig) spec.

The test channels (38 of them are just headers), the SSU data channels (in position 1 on both muxes), the screwing up of the series link, and random positioning of the channels - are all 2RN/RTE attempts to force the use of Saorview certified sets (for no commercial purpose at all). I have made complaints about this to no avail.

It is Comreg who should enforce this.

Saorview does have logic to their EPG positions if only they had enough take up the positions.

    1 - 10 main channels RTE 1 HD, RTE 2 HD, etc.
    11-20 main channels +1 RTE 1+1,
20-30 News channels. RTE News Now, OTV (if only), 2RN Info,

    Logical enough.

I wasn't referencing some specific receiver: you're not so hot on the old figures of speech, are you?

And I'm no 'Google pundit', I can assure you of that, sunshine. :)

Your a Bing man are ya i never liked that myself id usually prefer to go and work at things instead of correcting folks on an internet forum.

Did you notice in another thread right after you went along corrected some one in your usual manner they seen how you replied (as usual) which after they responded in a short reply they then closed their account. Now if that dont give you a clue as to your know it all manner than i dont know what ever will.

Sky cancelled. One month to go.
They got the price down from €49.97 to €17.

Shows what rip offs they are.
