AC only on one side Volvo C30

I've recently noticed an issue with my 2007 Volvo C30 AC.

When I turn on the AC I notice that only 2 of the 4 vents are blowing out cold air. Two on the passenger side work fine but the two on the drivers side do not work. It is a dual system i.e. different temps can be programmed to different sides of the car but whne testing both sides certainly have the same setting.

I've also noticed that when the AC is turned on there is a noticeable "hum" from the engine. This was not there before. Initally I though this could be the AC clutch engaging and just getting noisey from wear and tear but it wouldn't explain the AC only working on one side.

When the AC is off everything works fine and no "hum" from the engine.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure it's working fully on one side? It may need regassing, if your in Dublin there's a place doing re gas for €45...

Cheers, thanks for the advice. I am actually in Cork but can source someone to have a look at it locally if all it needs is to be regassed.

It does appear to be not working so great on the passenger side today but it's still better than the drivers side.

If it's low in refridgerent wouldn't all the vents still blow equally? Would it possibly just stop on one side and then progress to the other?

If it's ice cold on low I would think the refridgerent would be fine, if it's not I would be leaning towards a gas issue causing the problems. It's hard to diagnose AC issues. If you put the car with AC on to full heat do you get equal heat in both sides?

Yes, it produces equal heat in both sides for the full heat setting. Would this point to refridgerent being the issue on cold?

    Thanks

Sounds like it's one of the actuators on the heater box has packed up.Theres one for each side if I remember right.

Think you can control each side separately on the c30???

Yes they can be controlled separately. However the heaters work perfectly when AC is off. Blows hot and cold perfectly. If it was the actuators wouldn't the problem be there for both AC on/off?

No I think there's an actuator for both the Ac and the heating...ie 4 in total, 2 both sides.

I'm away from volvo for a while now but I think I've seen this before and it was one of the actuators that failed.

Ok that could very well be the problem. It might explain the "hum" I hear from the engine when the AC is turned on too.

I'm guessing the actuators could be recalibrated?
