    Call the guards

I don't think you should call the guards until you have thought through the consequences of such a decision. 20k is a huge dept. to mount up - are you sure it's only weed or could it be heroin or cocaine....

That's not helping the OP. Her son is gone, the rest of the family is now potentially in danger. The Gardai should be the first port of call. Nobody else can protect them.

I had a close friend in a similar position though the debt at its highest was around 6k. Get the guards involved asap. Let them know whatever threats have been made and by whom. They will keep an extra eye on your house and will know that if you call it is an emergency. There is a family support group in merchants quay which she found very useful. If you google merchants quay drugs you will get their phone number. Weed is a huge problem and from what her family found out is a much bigger problem re debts ran up than heroin. Makes send it suppose to get weed users selling than heroin addicts. My friend family came out the other side and hopefully yours will too. Please get help from the above asap, the this very seriously, these people are serious. Once her son was gone they left the family alone if that is any consolation.

It's quite likely the Gardai won't be able to help them either and that's something she needs to think about and also what the repercussions could be for going to the Gardai.

Definitely call the guards. My ex did a similar thing, ran off and the people he owed money to came to his parents house and did all sorts of damage.

You could also contact your local Al anon group, that's for families dealing with situations like this.

What are you suggesting she do?

ummm, weighing up who she is dealing with and what the best way to resolve it is. The guards can't just fix everything as simple as that and they aren't always the easiest solution either. It will be a proper mess if "these" criminals lose their money "and" get a sentence; with the op as a witness (stress, drawn out, very limited justice generally). Drugs dealers always fill a vacuum and it was your son that caused the problem.

The gang want their money not someones life. I'm sure they will be patient once negotiations are underway....cops could mean threats and threats could mean silence. And weakness shown is defeat in the underworld, and many members are psychopaths.

Even if you do tell the cops keep everything private within your trusted circle.

There isn't a crazy bunch of whacko's sitting around, plotting one of your family members deaths because of 20k. That goes against good business policy, would be stupid and they would get a serious kick up the **** from the underworld community. There not going to kidnap any of you if you don't have money or if your son doesn't.

I often get a sense from people that they think all you have to do is call the Gardai and then everything will be sorted and nothing will go wrong. Unfortunately real life isn't like that. I'd suggest she thinks through all the options she has a tries to figure out which best rather than just going to the Gardai without putting much thought into it.

I never suggested it was a miracle cure. But they should be her first port of call. Time to start acting within the law
