When did you 'come out' as a smoker?

I'm 21 now and only started smoking last year when I was away for the Summer. I know 20 is probably late to start but I did. Might have had 2 or 3 in my life before that but was always into sports and that.

The thing is I never smoke when I'm back home. My parents don't know I smoke - not that it matters as I'm 21 but I would still be embarassed smoking in front of them as they are very anti-smoking and nobody else in the family smokes. I'll have a few out in the pub alright.

Anybody else hide their smoking or is it just me?

Do you not get irritable and snappy with people at home when deprived of cigs for long periods?

I've noticed kids pick up vaping instead of smoking these days. So trumps on you for not giving in to peer pressure.

44 year old still hide it from my parents (hangs head in shame)
Didn't really start until I was 25, met the future Mrs. se conman who was/is a smoker.
You are only an amateur at being a secret smoker.😈

I was also corrupted by a woman. It's the worst vice in the world, I'll blame her till the day I die.

Don't think so. I like to think I'm not addicted. I try not to smoke too much anyway - want to stay fit enough - am hoping to join the Army

This isn't what cigarette addiction is like for a lot of people. I'd go for periods of up to two weeks without having a smoke. There'd be times when I'd sort of feel like one but I'd never be a sweaty mess getting taxis to the nearest 24-hour garage at 4am because I couldn't handle the withdrawal. There just tends to come a point where some part of my brain convinces me that it'd be alright to have the one fag then the next thing I know I'm back on a sack of baccy every two days. It's a subtle and very insidious kind of addiction.

If you've been smoking since last year then you're addicted.

I can limit my usage while sober, for instance I'll allow myself 6 a day mon to fri and usually keep to that, but I get into a panic if I'm running short, my worst nightmare is not having any in the morning. I'm a very uptight and stressed person at the best of times.

When I'm drinking I will go through a pack or more over the night. It's not good.

"came out" - 13 or 14. Gave them up when I was 33 though.

I smoked a cigarette in front of people. People said 'are you a smoker' I said 'I am yeah'

I smoked for 20 years and never smoked in front of my folks.. something just didn't feel right about it. I suppose I was smoking for 6 months before I considered myself to be a real smoker (20 per day). I managed to reduce it down to 3 at night with a few drinks for about 7 years, then I quit completely 3 years ago, I will never go back.

20 years - that's some time to keep it hidden alright.

When I started going out with my gf she smoked and I didn't. I didn't mind her smoking though. When I came back from my summer away I brought her back duty free cigarettes but she had given up and I had started over there. She nags me a bit about me smoking now which is kinda funny.

    At about 15 I'd say.
Back then smoking was actively encouraged(late 80's).We even had an official smokers shed in school where teachers and pupils would mingle and swap fags(seriously) and cough together.

Thanks for a lifelong habit Christian Brothers.

Before I knew it I was banging up in front of me dad & me nan.................nah not really. hehe but the rest is true I could write a book on it.

If your parents don't smoke and nobody in your family smokes. There is a good chance they know because of the smell off you.
    You should start a campaign.
Smokers Equality and have an big parade. So other smokers can come to terms with their smoking and come out.
