UK to Irish licence

    Hi,

I also stupidly gave up my uk licence to get local Irish one. Not alone did it cost 6 months of endless hassle and worry because I was left with no licence. I t also cost money and in a brilliant move I lost a load of categories on my old uk licence( vans mini-buses, small lorries etc.). So my tip is think before you give up old uk licence.. which is valid up to 75years. The ID card is just a card not your licence... you just need the long form and some ID TO CARRY ON DRIVING.

    Cheers

My tip is that UK licence categories are generally valid until your 70th birthday.

The UK photocard IS your licence. The paper counterpart was scrapped back in June.

Moved out from an unrelated thread that dealt with changing from Irish to Portuguese licence.

The point is the UK photocard isn't your license. That is to say the entitlement to drive is held separately and is valid until you reach the age of 70. The photocard is a physical manifestation of the license issued for security and identification purposes, but not having that when you're supposed to is a separate offence. In Ireland we do our best to con people into losing their licenses by treating the card as the logical entity and vice-versa, because we're very clever.
